It must be wonderful to have your spouse who has the same level of interest in family research!

I agree, WDYTYA sends my wife to sleep in minutes!

I also found it compelling and more fast-paced than most - Jane's direct questions seemed to keep things ticking over nicely with a lot of story/history to pack in.

Sad, as the holocaust ones always are, but not as harrowing as I found the Natasha Kaplinsky one.

Fife / Census Look-Up MOYES 19871/1881/1891 Dunfermline/Scoonie
« on: Wednesday 22 July 15 14:27 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for possible census entries for a Joseph Moyes who was born in Dunfermline in 1869 and possibly moved to Scoonie in subsequent years. His parents were Peter & Elizabeth.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I felt far too much time was spent looking at Christ's Hospital students walking around - the school & its ethos is nothing like it was in 17th, 18th centuries & 19th century when Tom Billingham was in there at its site in London. Although, yes, it is for children of 'poor' parents' it selects the cream & educates less pupils since 1985 [when the girls school moved from Hertford to Horsham with the boys].

Have to agree with you - there was no point in going to Horsham, apart from perhaps seeing the uniform in current use - the CH museum produced nothing else specific to Tom Billingham himself. It would have been nice to see something of what life would have been like for Tom in Newgate Street from contemporary prints and writings rather than filming the school as it is today. Two interesting stories though and Gary was fun.

OH and I enjoyed it also, we do however get a little fed up with the following up of 1 or 2 people and ignoring the "tree". The early series spent more time on researching the family tree as far back as possible. Less time on individuals as they do now, I remember one that went back (theoretically) to GOD as the tree went back to the ancient line of royalty.

That was Matthew Pinsent  :)

The Lighter Side / FA Searching for Descendants of the 'Founding Fathers'
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 14:42 BST (UK)  »
The Football Association has just launched a campaign to find descendants of the eight men who founded the movement - Ebenezer Cobb Morley (1831-1924), Arthur Pember (1835-1886), Charles William Alcock (1842-1907), Francis Maule Campbell (1843-1920), John Forster Alcock (1841-1910), Herbert Thomas Steward (1839-1915), George Twizell Wawn (1840-1914) and James Turner.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Ambrotype - clues?

Thank you JD and Jim for your additional input.

I can confirm that it is definitely glass.

The lady that I think it is was born in 1840 and gave birth to girls in 1859, 1861 and 1865.  The ambrotype came with items from the 1861 child's line, so I'd say that one of the girls is her.  This all fits in very well with what you have suggested JD - thank you for your insight.

Thank you Carol and China - yes, I'm very lucky to have this.

No, this wouldn't have been posted before.

I ignored all advice about the scan and did it on 2400 dpi  - it takes ages and the end result is a huge file, but I think it was worth it  :)

I'm almost positive the family are from the North-east of England, although I was wondering about the tartan theme going on.

Thanks again for your interest and advice.
