P.S. Is anyone able to trace the family further back than this? And are we related to anyone who migrated to Canada or America?

Hi

Just for further information...James Dotchin married for a third time to Jane Duff Scott. I'm descended from his second marriage to Lizzie Shields.

I too had pieced together that James was born in the workhouse in Chester-Le-Street, and may have had siblings John and Edward. I'm trying to confirm his parentage - would anyone be able to help? Although on his certificates he writes his father was James Gordon Dotchin and mother was Sarah Robinson, I can only find birth certificates for mother Sarah Dotchin with no father mentioned, however the man who registered the births was James Gordon. I thought this might mean that James was illegitimate and that his mother was the Dotchin rather than his biological father.

Although Dotchin is an uncommon name, lots of Dotchins seem to be called James or Sarah which doesn't help!!

Does anyone know where the name Dotchin came from? From the census maps it seems localised to the NE until later in the 19th century when they start to spread out.

Any advice or info would be helpful.

Hi

I am the granddaughter of Sarah Dotchin. Her mother Lizzie died in January 1925 and we believe it was shortly after that she left to live with her mother's sister Annie Legg. Sarah trained as a nurse in London. She later married Hector Boyle, my grandfather and settled in and around Glasgow. The family story handed down to us is rather vague - Sarah I think found it painful and difficult to talk about. I believe she felt a sense of abandonment from James, her father, but it's not quite clear in what way this manifested itself. I'm not sure if it had something to with the way she felt her father treated her or her mother. We never got the full story.

I would be very interested if you could help me trace the Dotchin line backwards from James. I've tried to piece a few things together about his parentage but the evidence is fragmentary and inconclusive. Also, do you happen to know the meaning or provenance of the name Dotchin at all?

P.S. Are you descended from James's first (Beatrice Miles) or third (Jane Duff Scott) marriage?

Kind regards.

Hi

I'm a descendant of Brabson Shields. My understanding is his father was James or William Shields who was a seaman, labourer and woollen weaver at various times. If you look in the 1891 census he is listed on board a ship docked in Wales. He is also in the 1911 census in Ayr. He died 1912. He appears in valuation rolls  1885 & 1905.

Brabson's mother was Ann Foster who died 1895. Her parents were James Foster and Rose Brannie.

Brabson married Sarah McCutchan and had Lizzie, William, Thomas, Sarah Jane and Annie.  I am descended from Lizzie.
