TG94, remember that he was an angry man by his nature, not that he was angry at you.

Martin

I believe that it was my mother's behaviour that caused his anger. With what I know now, I am not at all surprised that he had a lot of anger.

Without DNA I would never have known that my dad was not my real father. Something I never suspected for a moment. My real grandmother's birth certificate does not have the correct names on it, and my probable great grandparents did not marry until 7 years after my grandmother was born. I can find no birth record/baptism for my great grandfather and no marriage for his possible parents. I do not trust anything that I cannot find DNA proof for.

SO  are you glad you now know  !?  or where you better off in ignorance..!!

what do you think

Although it has been an overwhelming shock and I cry almost every day for my lost father, I am very glad I know the truth. It explains so much about my unhappy childhood. My mother was always the problem though, my dad (stepdad) did his best to be a good father too me and we loved each other. But he was always a very angry man. I am so much like my lost father in looks and personality. I always did wonder why none of the family appeared to resemble each other.

I am pretty sure that my great grandfather was John Willett (1863/1868 Dartford/Hastings) who married Matilda Jane Sandwell. The paper trail is virtually non-existent though. John and Matilda did not marry until 7 years after my grandmother, Gentina Willett was born and parted company 6 years later. My grandmother's birth certificate is fiction, but Willett is mentioned. My DNA points back to Richard and Louisa though. I believe that John was son of Richard and Louisa's son John born in 1842. John and his father are both described as cutler/blacksmith. John and Matilda are together in the 1901 census where he gives his date of birth as 1863 in Hastings. But I think he is a son of John and Teresa (Lee) in the 1881 census in Hastings. But I have never found a birth record for him or a marriage for his parents. I have a DNA match with a descendant of Lois Willett (Hastings 1873) who I believe was John's sister, but there is no maiden name and the mother is listed as Eliza! At her baptism they give the mother's name as Lois! Did John (son of Richard and Louisa) marry twice????? I have DNA connections to the Lee family, also Scamp, Boswell, Stanley, Smith. My family is driving me crazy!

My grandmother Gentina died in 1969, so there may still be some people alive who knew her. Sadly I did not know of her existence until a year ago. I have no close family alive that I can ask.

I think she was actually Louisa Collins. I believe she and Richard were my ancestors

Hello Roy,

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! Your post made my day as I have artistic talent, and no idea where it came from! I have been a photographer for many years and you can see my work at Shelagh Delphyne Photography. I can also be contacted there.

Have a wonderful Christmas! I look forward to hearing from you, and someone who might be able to shed light on my family. It appears from the records that Genty committed bigamy. It is a tangled web and I am just so sad that I never had the chance to meet Genty and ask her about the family. She died in 1969.

Many thanks, Shelagh

I just came across your post. I am trying to trace my Willett family (after a DNA 'discovery') My grandmother was Gentina Willett. She was born in Portsmouth but grew up in Hastings. Her mother was Matilda Jane Sandwell and possible father John Willett (son of John, a cutler). One of my theories for John sr is the brother of Henry Willett who was Thomas Willett's father. If your wife knew anything of Gentina (Genty) Willett, who married a Compton, I would love to know. Apparently Genty took my father Maurice down to Hastings regularly for a holiday.

I am really struggling with identifying my Willett family and trying to match it to my DNA. My closest matches are Scamps, Boswells and Lees.
