Perthshire / James MILLER again (Auchterarder, Perthshire)
« on: Wednesday 14 June 17 13:33 BST (UK)  »
James Miller was born 19/10/1859 in Auchterarder, Perthshire. His birth certificate states that he is illegitimate and his name is James STEIN. I have found his mother (Margaret Stein) but can find no reason why his birth certificate has him as Stein but on the 1861 census he is named as James Miller. When he got married to Catherine Jones in 1893 he named his father as James Miller (deceased).

In the 1880's he moved with his mother, step father and half siblings to Liverpool. In 1901 he was with his wife and children (Margaret, Helen, Anthony, Lillie and Rose) and I have him in 1911 back living with his mother and grandmother. Catherine was in the workhouse in Liverpool on the 1911 census and the children were split up. My GF was in another workhouse in 1911, aged 5. Little wonder that he turned out to be a nasty piece of work.

So, I have 2 issues that I really need help with. I have been struggling with these now for more than a week. If anyone can provide me with pointers I will be very grateful.

1) Who was James Miller, the father of my GGF, who must have been in Perthshire in 1860, and probably in Auchterarder as my GGGM was a farm servant and presumably didn't travel far

2) When and were did James Miller die. I would love to know why the family split up, but that seems a far stretch to discover unless someone on this forum is a distant relative and knows the family history that was never discusses in my family

I have been searching for HOURS on Scotland's people trying to find the family on the 1861 census with no joy. I have found the record on Ancestry but that doesn't match up with anything in Scotland. From ancestry I have the roll number (CSSCT1861_47) is there any way that I can use that? The birth certificate says illegitimate, no mention of father and he is named James Steen. I want to get hold of the 1861 census and then move on from there. I am also interested to find out when the name changed to Miller. Family legend has it that the original was Muller. Any tips on getting hold of the 1861 census when a search for Janet Caw, James Miller and Andrew Mcrea in Auchterarder returns no results no matter how I fiddle with spellings and variants. I could quite possibly get even more mad than usual.

Thank you all, especially Rosinish, I reckon this is my relative's birth certificate. He was born October 1859. And Margaret married Walter Scott in 1863. She was 25 and he was 22. Must have been a nice man or maybe she was lovely.

Now I can try to sort out the forward and backward from there! I'll keep you posted

Dear All, thanks for all the help. I have only been doing this for a week or so and have become obsessed, but not skilled. I thought I had to post on the Scotland board and the Liverpool board for help on the two ends of the puzzle. I will know better next time.

Thank you all so much for the help. You see why I was so confused. I will buy credits when I have done the ironing and post the results. It is wonderful to finally be able to make the Scottish connection solid. All of my knowledge, little that it is, is of the Liverpool end, but family stories of someone coming down from Scotland and giving James (or his mother?) money were repeated. Family law mentions a German connection. No idea what that is. That is for once I have made this part solid. Thanks again, will post later today

I am rather new to all of this, thanks for those who have replied already. I have added more information at the end of the post to show how far I have got. What I would like to be able to do is pinpoint his death and see if I have bought the right certificate. Then I want to see why and how the family dispersed.

Dear All, I have hit a dead end with my Great Grandfather, James Miller. In 1901 he was living with his wife, Catha(e)rine and their children, including my grandfather Anthony and twin 1 month old daughters, Rose and Lillie. In 1911 the whole family was dispersed and his wife was in the workhouse and Anthony was in another in Fazakerley. The twins died in 1901. Can anyone please help me to sort out this mess???? I bought the death certificate of a James Miller, but now I am not sure it is him. My GF joined the merchant navy when he was way underage, he lied about his age. Eventually he became a doorman at the Adelphi and committed suicide in 1958. A very troubled man, but hardly surprising given his start in life.
