Family History Beginners Board / Re: Chaplains Returns & Marriage Certs

Hi,
Many thanks for the responses.  To answer one question the the Chaplains Returns were transcripts but I also found in "Army Returns - Marriages - 1796 to 1880" which appears to be an image, an entry for Allen Hedley.  The page format is 2 identical sections each of 5 columns headed Surname, Name, Station, Year and page, which in the subject case is page 599 as per the transcript.

Regards,
Horn

Hi,
Can anyone explain why dates on GRO Chaplains Returns and Marriage Certs are totally different.  The GRO Chaplains Returns Marriages 1796 to 1880 records the marriage of Allen Hedley in Trinidad, West Indies stating the marriage year as 1825, but the name of spouse is not stated.  I found exactly the same details i.e. location, year, page number of record (599) but the name was Pricilla Haswell, but again no spouse name given.  I purchased a copy of the marriage cert and received a certified copy of an entry of marriage (SA 087049), Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Special Provisions) Act 1957 which stated, "Marriages 1818 and 1819 Trinidad Royal Artillery.  29th November R Artillery Allen Hedley Serjt. a Bachelor and Pricilla Haswell a widow of the R. Y. Rangers were married by me R Harold Off. C.F. Serjt and Mrs Bailey R.Y. Rs. & Robert McLean R.A."
How are the dates so different from what appears to be the same marriage.  Also, who or what are the R.Y. Rangers?

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Many thanks for that.  I had not known about Free Reg so I went into it and put in Allen Hedley, the year 1771 and subject as "marriage" and nothing was found.  I did the same with Elisabeth Robson and received the same answer.  I'm obviously doing something wrong.  I will try finding that marriage elsewhere.  Thanks for finding the information though, it could prove to be the way forward.

Hi Bev,

That's a great lead, many thanks.  I suspected that Allen Hedley was probably married before his marriage to Priscilla but I couldn't find any evidence of that.

Many thanks
Ken

Family History Beginners Board / Tracing Allen Hedley's parents
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to trace the parents of Allen Hedley.  Born in the parish of Elsdon Northumberland about 1781 according to his military record but his burial record states his birth about 1778.

He served in the Royal Regiment of Artillery from 1803 until 1825.  He married a widow Priscilla Haswell (Nee Goodman) in 1825 in Trinidad, West Indies and died in an accident at Woolwich Arsenal in1843.  I have tried through Ancestry, Find my Past and a visit to Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn to find his baptism record but have drawn blank.
I have been stuck on this now for months so if anyone can help or suggest a way forward I would be very grateful.

Many thanks
K

Northumberland / Re: Identifying parent of Allen Hedley b 1781

Hi,

Thanks for your responses. I found the burial record for Allon Hedley and I also searched the Rev Thomas Stephens transcript of Elsdon Parish Records again.  1803 is only mentioned twice and all the Allon Hedley's are in the 1600's. In the document the surname Hedley appears 931 times. The burial record from FreeREG of Allon Hedley in 1803 states the transcript was by a Ron Charlton and the credit is to the Rev Thomas Stephen's.  So I assume there must be another transcript which I shall try and find.  Thanks for pointing that out.

It appears that Allen Hedley's descendants for a couple of generations attended Scotts Church in Woolwich so I am searching to see if Allen Hedley was baptised in the Presbyterian Church which I understand was very strong in Northumberland on the late 1700's

I have a great deal of information on Allen Hedley including: his discharge papers from the Royal Artillery, his marriage to a widow Priscilla Haswell in Trinidad, West Indies, his membership of a masonic lodge and details of his fatal accident in Woolwich Arsenal in 1843.
Thanks for your help it is much appreciated
Regards

Northumberland / Identifying parent of Allen Hedley b 1781
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying for months to identify the parents of my 3xGt Grandfather Allen Hedley (or perhaps Allan Headley).  He was born about 1781 in Elsdon, (it’s not clear if that is the village/town or the parish) Northumberland, UK,  I have searched on Ancestry, Find My Past and The Register of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials in the Ancient Parish Church of Elsdon in the County of Northumberland 1672 to 1812 as transcribed by Rev Thomas Stephens, all to no avail.

I am very new to tracing my ancestry and would be very grateful for any advice on how to overcome this brick wall

Many thanks

Hi All

I'm back after a very busy weekend.  Thank you all for your recent responses.  I have found (on Ancestry, England Select Birth & Christenings) a birth and baptism record for William James Hedley b 26/01/1822, bp 03/03/1822, the latter was at Scots Church, Woolwich. The FHL film No is 0597070 (RG4 1993), whatever that is.  Very strange that the birth and baptism dates are the same as the one that Annette found with a miss spelt surname, but the baptism was held at a different church.  Unless of course Scots Church was a local name for St Andrews which would make sense.

What I'm really struggling with is the information from Daisy.  I just cannot find my way around the National Archives to retrieve the WO23 information that she obtained.

I'm still sorting through all the other leads you have all provided

Many thanks.

Regards

Hi Annette,

You're a star, you have indeed answered all my queries.  In your latest response I have learnt a great deal on how the recording system worked at the time.  I'm not sure where to go from here but I have a meeting soon with a genealogy group I belong to who is having a guest speaker who is specialises in  genealogy so I will pick his brains.  I just admit with my present knowledge and experience I find it very difficult to navigate in FindMyPast and Ancestry.co.uk

Thanks again for all your help and advice

Regards
