Robert and Eliza's children are:

Definite - Elizabeth (b1871 Blackpool)
                 Thomas William (b1875 Bury)
                 John (b1877 d1881 both Bury)
                 James Henry (b1880 Bury)

Highly likely but not 100% sure due to family being broken up after death of Eliza in 1888.

Margaret Alice (b1882 d1885 both Bury)
Charles (b1885 Bury)

Trying to find out about the early life of my GGG-Grandfather Robert Dagger. I have two pieces of concrete information.
The earliest is his marriage on August 23rd 1871 to Eliza Priscilla Barrow in Christ Church, Blackpool. Both are of full age. Bachelor and Spinster. His father is William Dagger a Labourer, the witnesses are George Waring and Jane Greaves.

Some more clues as to his origins are found in the 1881 census. He is now head of the household in Bury, having moved there sometime between the Christening of their eldest my GG-Grandmother Elizabeth in January 1872, again in Christ Church and the birth of their next child who is born in Bury in 1875.
The details from Elizabeth's Christening are that Robert is a Labourer as per his marriage and that their abode is 'Blackpool'.
On the '81 census Robert gives his age as 32 (so 1849) and birthplace is 'Plunton, Lancashire' - There is no such place I believe in the Fylde area. Google search suggests Plumpton. Seems a likely mistranscribe to me.
Just to add, his wife and her family come from the (Great) Marton area of Blackpool.

Nothing else to go on. Hope that is enough to locate him.

Thank you very much,

Jonathan

Armed Forces / IWM sound collection

Hi,

Do hope this is in the right place on the forum. Apologies if not.

I am interested in listening to some of the 'oral history' parts of the Imperial War Museum's sound collection.

However when I click on any one of them it says 'Error loading player: No playable sources found'

If it says there is a player, then that suggests you can listen online. Also it doesn't expressly say you can't listen online.

Is there a way? - I've tried accessing on different devices but just get the same message.

Thanks

Jonathan

I will attempt to scan the documents so you can take a look for yourself.

However to my eye it always looks like ME followed by a two digit number.

Hi,

On the 'Service and Casualty Form' it is in the column headed 'Unit'.

Before he leaves England he is in 109 Coy. Then struck off and sent to 'A Coy 1 Holding Bn. RASC'

From there to Camberley Reception Depot in the days leading up to embarkation.

Upon arrival overseas he starts in 6 Bn. GRTD and ends up in ME39 via ME20.
All this takes place on his first day upon disembarkation.

On another record. Much smaller, looks more like a Service Card.
All his postings are on this, unlike the Service and Casualty Form which is over four A4 sheets.

Here the ME 'units' are in columns headed 'Postings'.

Starting with enlistment in Oct '41 - 12 Training Btn.
3.4.42 - HQ 9 Arm'd Div.
28.9.42 - 4 Mob Cen RASC.
14.10.42 - 79 Arm Div (last word, looks like place name but can't make out)
1.2.43 - 109 AR DV TPS COY.
2.8.43 - 1 Holding Btn.
4.8.43 - Camberley Reception Depot.
No date - RZKHY
13.8.43 - To N/Africa
25.8.43 - ME20
25.8.43 - ME39
1.1.44 - To Middle East
29.1.44 - ME53
1.10.44 - To CMF
26.2.45 - 576 SSD

On his 'Notification of Release' papers he lists under 'Unit'
'No.10 Command Depot Medical Stores'
With 'Last Serving With' added before 'Unit'
Regt or Corps - RASC

Should add this record also has:

Age and Service group - 25 (C)
Army No. - S/292085
Present Rank - W.O.I  (S.S.M)

Age? - if this is of my Great-Grandfather  then someone somewhere is mistaken. He was 40 upon release in '46.

World War Two / RASC unit identification

I have been enjoying reading the service records of my Great-Grandfather.

He was a clerk in civvy street before the war and put those skills to good use in the RASC (Royal Army Service Corps) in North Africa and Italy.

He was moved around several units but the most time was spent in ME39.

My main question is what does ME stand for.
Is the unit a unit within the clerk part of the RASC or was he stationed as clerk with ME39?

Any other information about the RASC and the role of clerks in particular would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jonathan

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Ives of Thurston's research. Advice on next steps sort.

Great stuff. What resource did you use to glean the additional information.
There wouldn't by any chance be intel on the witnesses to the following marriage?

Charles Ives to Elizabeth Elliot, Doncaster, July 16th 1837

Noticed as well that my thread title has changed. Don't mind such much only the place name has changed to Thurston, which is in Suffolk. Don't want folk (North or South) thinking I've got the wrong thread.
It is definitely Thurlstone, West Riding of Yorkshire. Think that flaming predictive text changed it.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Ives of Thurston's research. Advice on next steps sort.
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 02:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been doing some research on possible relations for my GGGG-Grandfather Jonas Ives. Born in Thurlstone, near Penistone in about 1801 (could be a year either side, only have census information to go on for birth year)

Now given that the place is only small and Ives isn't too common in the Penistone area it is a safe bet that all Ives living in Thurlstone are related to Jonas.

I've come up with a dozen or so persons and have been tinkering around with a possible tree. My reason for asking for advice is, given the time period (late 18th century/early 19th) am I now as far as I'm ever going to get with this?
Having scoured the earlier censuses, used the online records by which I mean those available on certain sites whom I'm not sure if we are allowed to mention or not. So I'll just say Mormons.

Some good finds, like the birth and Christening dates of several possible siblings and also aunts and uncles.
All possible siblings give the same parents. Alas no Jonas birth or Christening to tie in with this family.

I would like to know if more information can be found in Jonas's marriage in 1828 to Sarah Teal Briggs in Doncaster. Some records give father's name and some don't.
Is that just dependent on the record?

Thank you, and any advice on my next (hopefully) possible move would be gratefully received.

They were born abt 1795 give or take a decade or so.

Children I have for them are Sarah, James and Mary

Sorry I can't be more exact,
