Warwickshire / Re: Heath's of Birmingham, early 19th C
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 09:10 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Col C,
Thanks for finding a little more about these Heath's, I'm still not sure if they are 'my' Heath's yet. I hope to one day make a connection to a descendant to see if there is a genetic link.

My William the convict was tried at 1 Aug 1833 Warwick Assizes, no former convictions recorded, convicted of stealing cloth. Sentenced to 7 years transportation

28 Aug 1833 At Woolwich, aboard the hulk Justitia, awaiting transportation, departed England 7 Mar 1834 with 300 other convicts aboard the Susan.

9 Jul 1834 Arrived at Sydney Cove, aboard the Susan. Recorded as single, can read, a Protestant, a gun finisher, sallow and freckled, 5'3", brown hair and hazel eyes.
Distinguishing marks: small mole right side of neck, anchor in blue ink and four red dots on lower left arm, blue ring on middle finger of left hand, man and woman inside right arm
(New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842)

Cheers and Happy New Year from down under :), Robin

Warwickshire / Heath's of Birmingham, early 19th C
« on: Tuesday 01 January 19 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from Australia, I am descended from William Heath b 1813 Birmingham, (transported to NSW 1834) I am trying to find his English family. His DC records Samuel and Mary as his parents. One of my cousins has sent me a family tree for Samuel and Mary Heath m 1809 Edgbaston, and their children Joseph b 1810, Samuel b 1814, William b 1813, Charlotte b 1819, Charles b 1822 and Phebe b 1825. All baptised St Phillips Birmingham. It could be our Heath's, has any one had any luck with this line by blood lineage or DNA ? Thanks for your help, Robin

« on: Thursday 21 September 17 09:00 BST (UK)  »
Thanks again Suz,
Firstly to the John Bentley:
The president of the Frederick Meredith Descendants group sent me this info this week -
`````````
The tree referred to of John Bentley's has the following first entry
1st Generation
William Mason
Born      -
Mar.      1- 2- 1583 St, Matthews Walsall Elnor Hanson
Died      1615 Walsall
Bur.      3- 6- 1615 St. Matthews Walsall
This was the text of her email
(nb Pat Meredith was the esteemed researcher of the family and was great at finding lots of info and details about the family)
Pat Meredith sent the list to me, copied to about half a dozen others, on 14 November 2003. Alice Stilk from the Liverpool (NSW) Family History group had sent much of the information to Pat and when Pat asked for the source of the information she was told John Bentley who lives in Walsall and his wife is a relation of Sarah Mason. Our Sarah Mason is the 43rd person shown in that tree.  Pat didn’t pass on John Bentley’s contact details but he was living in Walsall in 2003 but that is 14 years ago so he may or may not still be living.
`````````````
So now you know as much as I do, Suz - this Mason must somehow be related to the Bentley's but no idea of the link. Are you of the Bentley clan, or Walsall related, or do you just like helping lost people like me  :)

Can I ask where did you find the court doc for Sarah ?

We have a very good record of Sarah's life in Australia, I'm just trying to find where her family came from and Walsall seems a good place to start. I currently have 5 people I'm trying to follow back to the UK, after many years I'm beginning to think I should give up ??? Our BDM is great (when they have a record) but I believe errors in family history and record keeping need to be sorted out and corrected if we can.

Yes A****y causes me more grief than joy, as I like to have 2 real ref docs for each person I include in my tree. I'm only doing the direct line of descent, not collecting huge numbers of people so I'm in no rush to do each entry.

So that's it from sunny Sydney, we're heading for 30 deg C on the weekend, and it's not even Summer yet. Hope you enjoy your weekend too

Robin

I found john peak reg PEAK  JOHN 780/1798 V1798780 1A  JOHN  SARAH (MASON) and 2 more in our BDM, wow you have certainly given me something to think about ;D

Thank you for your reply Suz,
the date I am having trouble with is her supposed baptism. According to Mr Bentley's tree she was baptised 24/7/1765 at Walsall and I have not found this record in my searches. However she had the last of her 5 children in 1813 which would make her 48. So she was either the most fecund woman in the colony or she was born about 1776 (which is in line with her age recorded at trial - 16), and about 37 in 1813.

Your info says Sarah was 24 (ie b~1768), So another red herring arises :), nice description though.
From the Old Bailey site I found Sarah recorded as 16:
336. JOHN SPENCER , was indicted for stealing, on the 12th of June last, six linen shifts bodies, value 4 s. four aprons, value 8 s. a velveret waistcoat, value 2 s. and a pair of velveret breeches, value 5 s. the property of William Thomas .
And LETITIA STEVENS and SARAH MASON were indicted for receiving the said goods, knowing them to be stolen .
WILLIAM THOMAS sworn.
I am a broker in Maiden-lane; the prisoner Spencer worked for me a month: I lost the things; they were taken from a closet.
The different pawnbrokers produced the things pawned by the other prisoners.
(The things deposed to.)
JOHN SPENCER , GUILTY .
Transported for seven years .
LETITIA STEVENS , SARAH MASON , (Aged 16.)
GUILTY .
Transported for fourteen years .
Tried by the second Middlesex Jury before Mr. Justice BULLER.

The trouble is one of our most respected researchers has said Bentley's tree is correct so I am challenging the accepted 'truth' of our tree in Australia. Sarah and her hubby Fred Meredith have over 12k descendants and it is a common pass-time to copy 'the tree' over and over again. I'm just trying to double check all the records as I come across them.

I found a Baptism record for a Sarah Morgan, this might be closer to the mark (or not):
11 May 1777 Parish St Giles Willenhall, Staffordshire, England
Father's Name Richd Morgan, Mother's Name Lidy Morgan.
Willenhall is a medium-sized town in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall, in the West Midlands

I hope this ramble makes sense, and I would appreciate your thoughts
Kind regards
Robin

Hello, I am researching Sarah Mason b 1765 ? Walsall (convict) arrived Australia 1792. Another cousin has had correspondence in 2003 from a John Bentley who lives in Walsall and his wife is a relation of Sarah Mason. Does anyone here know of this John Bentley ? He has Sarah on his tree but (IMHO) the dates just don't seem to gel. I would love to write to him to clarify a couple of queries. Thanks to any one who reads this and can offer advice, cheers from Australia, Robin
