Hi Mark

F/O Banfield had originally been posted with his crew to 106 Squadron at RAF Syerston in October 1943.

He flew a second pilot trip to Kassel on 22/23 Oct 43 with P/O Hoboken but they were attacked by a night fighter and 5 or 6 of the crew were injured of which I think Banfield may have been one of them.

He didn't fly again at Syerston but then must have transferred to 83 Sqn at some point.

Oh ok Justin. I wasn't sure in the cases of aircraft that had ditched so thanks for confirming that Loss Cards were produced for them.

Yes this Sgt Gilmour was a WOp rather than a Nav but I know these things can get distorted over the years so I thought it worth a mention.

Sgt Gilmour's Service Record would still be the best way to go to narrow it down.

I believe Bomber Loss Cards were only produced for aircraft that were lost outside of the UK - I'm not sure that an aircraft ditching in the channel would qualify if survivors were picked up?

I have found a Sgt R Gilmour who flew with 44 Squadron. He took off from Dunholme Lodge on 20th October 1943 in Lancaster EE184 (KM-B) on an Op to Leipzig and ditched sometime later, South East of Grimsby.

John / Chris

You are correct that this Halifax JN884 did fly out of RAF Lissett on its last Op to Essen.

I am investigating a photo that could be Sgt J Loudoun so I was just wondering if anything else had come to light since you made these posts a couple of years ago?

Thanks

Hi Sandy

I know about these photos. They were taken at RAF Metheringham late 1943 / early 1944 when 106 Squadron was based there.

The one with the cartoons shows P/O Fred Mifflin killed on the Schweinfurt Op of 26/27 April 1944 and the others I know a bit about too if you'd like to message me.

I am interested in seeing your copies though because I think they will probably be better quality then the ones I have.

I am also interested in your late mother being a WAAF there.
