Sorry a bit late joining this conversation.  I am a descendant of the first wife Eleanor Whitmore.  My 2xgrandfather was Caleb born 1836.  Often puzzled how he managed to join the Metropolitan Police in 1869.  He could obviously read and write sufficiently well to hold down the job until he retired 1895, finally ending his days in Surrey with his son George and family.  Considering he was only 18months when his mother died, he did well to survive.  One clue was that he named my great grandmother after the mother of the Wesley brothers who founded the Methodist movement.  Another item that came out on his police recruitment papers was that he was 5'7" and auburn.  So the ginger gene in the family.................
