« on: Thursday 19 October 23 10:54 BST (UK)  »
not too much help I'm afraid but I remember reading in a local paper (Down Recorder??) that John Lennons ancestors originated from the Castlewellan area of County Down in a small farming hamlet called Aghlisnafin (hope that's spelt correctly)

The Common Room / Re: Edgar Spooner King - just some questions
« on: Wednesday 29 June 22 16:54 BST (UK)  »
I was recently contacted by a distant and most helpful relative who has supplied details of the last years of Edgar Spooner(who now just used Edgar King as his name), apparently after the death of his 3rd wife he emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand on the 2nd January 1882 arriving on the ship "Wellington", he was followed there later by some of his children, Mary, Francis and Theresa. He started work by opening a small Sarsaparilla drinks store which was viewed back then as a health tonic before returning to his earlier trade of tailor/cutter, he died tragically in 1884 in his 72nd year after falling off the Otakia bridge over the river Taieri subsequently drowning, he was on his way to meet his family prior to catching a ship back to Auckland....

thanks for your help.......possibly Mary King could be a forebear as no one in the family can pinpoint the origin of the family surname King-Spooner (I've updated my family tree with a question mark) thanks again

thanks for such a prompt and helpful response,  my initial research was to find the origin of the surname King-Spooner.......Thomas who went by the surname Spooner as well as King Spooner shows  on ancestry.com records as birthplace Wicklow Ireland 1856. He was married and divorced a few times in his life so the mention of him being a bachelor is quite feasible, my quandary is that there is also mention of a Thomas King Spooner being born in Islington, London UK around 1857 who also has a father named Edgar Spooner born in 1813, I think this if it is a coincidence is quite remarkable but am inclined to think it is the same person.....at least now I've discovered a register of death and will try to unearth the correct birthplace      regards Griff
