I know exactly how frustrating researching a common surname can be.  I've had that with a couple of my surnames.

Once you start getting to dates that are before BMD records began it gets harder.  The best you can do is to make a note of any possibilities and where you found them, so you don't repeat the same searches again.

Records are being added online all the time.  Perhaps a few years down the line the one you want will be available.

Other alternatives are to visit the relevant Record Office for the area and search there.  Perhaps the local family history society may be able to assist you in your quest.

Not sure if the Chepstow Society will be any help, but you could try writing to them.

Thank you GirlGuide.

I will take a look at the links. I accept the frustration when my 'its not going to beat me' attitude subsides lol.

I have many lines to progress and am pleased with the overall progression of my tree.

If only however, our ancestors had placed our 'future need for records' and turned up where they should, behaved themselves & made sure the spelling of surnames was consistent with the past rather than concentrate on their own troubles and curved balls of the times eh !!

I'm going to give Jones a rest and try to further another line for a while I think. I have a couple of Galliers whom I believe were soldiers in the Napoleonic War I'd like to find more about ie where / when / foot soldiers or on horseback :)

Not wildly helpful, mmn Jones!

JONES, ROBERT       JONES
GRO Reference: 1838  J Quarter in MONMOUTH  Volume 26  Page 79

If the census states that he was born in Chepstow then the birth registration would also be Chepstow.  The above is Monmouth.

' Not wildly helpful ' - got it in one and I felt the same when I saw 'Jones' on GRO as MMn. Could be right or a transcribe error. Hence my asking the experienced searchers on this board :)

I'm only grasping at Chepstow from an earlier post comment. I can only find Monmouthshire as I commented on my original post but, as has been highlighted, its too big an area.

There has to be a way to logically work this one out ?

Familysearch have this one born c1836 Chepstow:

Thanks candrjm.

Yes - its that Census 1851 record i'm trying to work off. Robert is noted as 'Nephew' with James Powell & Elizabeth Powell. I know the connection is probably right (although not sure on birth year from census) as James Powell is a witness on Roberts marriage certificate to Eliza Cornish.

Still struggling, with little Robert information to work out if Robert was Nephew of James Powell or Elizabeth ?? (as that would help with the location of Robert)

Morning all :)

I have picked up on trish1120 comment re Chepstow, Monmouth and was working a scenario out with Robert (1837) and Father Thomas being Chepstow related.

Can someone take a look at a record for me please?

Robert Jones 1838 J Qtr Monmouth

Volume 26  Page 79

I'm hoping that the parents names are mentioned or at least Thomas as the fathers name.

Would be grateful as I think this is 'beating' us all at the moment and be good to sort it :)

Thanks

Doesnt 1891 say Chepstow for Robert?

I also noticed this Birth Reg has Eliza as Cornish;
JONES, LAURA , Mothers mn CORNISH
GRO Reference: 1863  M Quarter in WANDSWORTH  Volume 01D  Page 474

1841 Eliza is in Devon as you likely know with Parents under Cornish

If I jave the right 1901 Census Robert says he is born c 1841 Chepstow, Eliza c 1847 Tavistock, Devonshire
Living in Sussex

Thanks Trish

I have sight of the Family Search Census details and it just says Monmouthshire by 1891. If you have the extra Chepstow within sight - hopefully that may help. However, there is a bit of Monmouthshire movement from Birth to Marriage place to first child birthplace.

Laura is third child in 1863 Wandsworth. All children show Cornish on GRO as mothers maiden name except one. Also first child, William b Pontypool, second child Fanny b Faversham and the other 5 b Wandsworth Middlesex.

Confusion around Eliza surname which I believe to take as Cornish. All Children GRO state Cornish barr one as I mentioned above. Marriage Cert seen and BMDfree record show bride as Eliza Cornish Milton. Eliza's mothers maiden name shows in GRO as Milton BUT on wedding Certificate Eliza's Fathers name is given as Milton not Cornish.

Interested to source / need help with citation/notes on Richard birth though as only way to father Thomas I would feel :)

Also a lot of people resisted registration in the beginning, some were suspicious of it and considered  baptism was all they needed. Until  1875 registration was the responsibility of the Registrar to go out and locate and record births, only from 1875 did onus change to the parents etc.

Understand and accept. Hopeful though that Robert and family 'embraced change' lol

Is his birthplace ever given more specifically than Monmouthshire in the censuses?

Presumably you are aware that if he was born before the introduction of civil registration on 1 July 1837 there will not be a birth certificate.

1871 Census - Noted as Monmouthshire (Robert Aged 34)

1881 Census - Noted as London, Middlesex (Aged 45)  - All the family have the same Birth Place incorrectly described. They were living in Battersea. Robert was Monmouthshire, Eliza Devon so imagine they just completed there current address whereabouts on the form.

1891 Census - Noted as Monmouthshire (Aged 54)

In the 1861 Census it only shows Eliza and William First son) on 1861 census still living Llanhilleth, Monmouthshire where the family went after marriage but Robert not with them. Only a hunch, but he’s possibly elsewhere working or searching a job as the family then move to Battersea where they are for the 1871 Census.

Aware of the 1837 cusp but live in hope that he may have been the 'right side' of the year OR the experience of those here could locate the Parish for a record search in the Parish Book.

Trying to sight the Birth Certificate details of

Robert Jones 1837 +/- 1y.

Census suggest birth in Monmouthshire, Wales and 1891/1881 census age stated have led to 1837.

Searching Family Search / FreeCen and Monmouthshire locally transcribed records brings up nothing.

Wedding Certificate (seen actual) 1859 (3rd Apr) to Eliza Cornish Milton shows Roberts father as Thomas (Dec'd) and Robert 22yr Batchelor Engineer. Wedding was in Trevethin, Monmouthshire.

Need to find Robert to continue search to Thomas so grateful for any direction/help with either.

Thanks
