The Lighter Side / Re: Public Graves

Hi
yes - I'm still on rootschat! These replies are all very interesting. My relatives public grave also has inscriptions on both sides and is in Manchester so Lancashire also did it. I will definitely look up guinea
graves.
This site is just fantastic. I have had new information from queries I have posted years ago, all building my knowledge.
Cheers Heather

Aberdeenshire / Re: Kelman ...4 Raggs Lane, Broad Street, Aberdeen

Common lodging houses or "doss" houses were often an alternative to the workhouse and people may have been referred to as an inmate. One at 4 Raggs Lane was owned by a family ancestor and indeed remained in the family for many years after.

The collections on Wesleyans are difficult to penetrate in some instances. JW was a follower of the Rev Champness and spent time in Rochdale, Crewe and Cornwall being "taught" before embarking on his journey to India. I am also fortunate to have pictures of other Edlin preachers from the Vale in the 1860s. It has been a real learning curve researching them all but very enjoyable.

The kindness of people never ceases to amaze me. It has made my year! The family all assumed that he would have been in an unmarked grave, there are only 2 other gravestones for this family as they didnt believe it necessary so this is a real turn up.
Sounds like a trip of a lifetime cycling across the continent, I may have to consider where I go next holiday, (after my Marrakech trip!)

Hi Tak

I am absolutely stunned by this, thank you so much! It is amazing to know that his grave is still about. It adds the finishing touch to my history of his life, there has been so much documented about him but I never dreamt I would see a picture of his grave. I have pictures of him along with school books he wrote in, testamonials and now this. I only wish his neice was still alive so I could show her, sadly she died earlier this year.
My mum will be very pleased as will other members of the family and I will see if the schoolroom built in his memory would like a copy of this.
Thank you for doing this, it really is fantastic ;D
have a fabulous christmas and a very happy new year

Armed Forces / Naval Records help please THS Hitchin

Hi

I am hoping someone can help me find out a bit more about  Thomas Harry Stanley Hitchin born 1902.
I have his medal roll details for Long Service and Good Conduct which give his number as M39835 and rank as RPO (think this is military police?).

I would appreciate any insight or pointers as to where to find out when he joined up and about his service. I have tried the national archives online with no luck - but then I never seem to find much on there as it is a bit confusing for me!

Many thanks
Midmum :)

There is a large Jewish community in the Manchester / Salford area and there is also a Jewish musuem which may prove useful.
