The Common Room / Midwife or delivery records 1918 - Oundle/Barnwell
« on: Wednesday 23 October 19 14:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to trace a record of my grandmothers birth. Where would I find a midwife record or a delivery record of a birth in 1918 Oundle/Barnwell?

Not sure if a midwife would of travelled out from a location or a hospital. Not sure what happened back then.

Thank you

Thank you Osprey
So confusing as some records are McGeary and others McGarry. I think that is what threw me.
I wonder if the Dad Thomas McGeary/McGarry was in the military. He was in ports. My next mystery to solve. He was born in Ireland.

Hi Heywood
Thank you! I am going to get more information from that. That is a great break in the mystery.

Hi oldohiohome

So he was posted out to Halifax 14.4.81 to 7.9.82

So he should of been on the 1881 census. He was loving on the HMS Hood ( not the one that sank) but the first one, in the Gillingham harbour when he got married. And they weren't living at 60 Pier Road in 1881 either. Which census would he be on? Did the barracks have their own census?

Hi Ray
Joseph was in the Royal Engineers. His service record showed that he was in Halifax and then posted to India. After Halifax, he came home and then was sent to Karachi, India, which is now Pakistan. He stayed there for a few years doing various jobs for the Royal Engineers. They had most of their children there and that is where Ellen died at 36 of a strangulated hernia. (Horrid way to die).

I see what I wrote, sorry. I meant to say they both seemed to have left England in 1881. he was posted to Halifax until 1882, and then went to India.

Joseph was posted to Halifax Nova Scotia from 14/4/1881 to 07/09/1982

I think the 60 Pier Road is significant because when their daughter Mary got married, they lived at 60 Pier Road for a bit. So perhaps that's the Johnson link. I just thought they got the number wrong. But I trailed through every household in Pier road on that census. So what you said makes sense.

Hi Jon
Thank you for searching for me. I will try and look up these links.
If her dad died in 1872, would he still be included on her marriage certificate as a pensioner or deceased?

When Ellen married Joseph, she was already pregnant with my great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Travis. Joseph was posted to Nova Scotia in 1881. I cant find a census record for them in 1881. Would they of taken their baby?
I found a Johnson at 60 Pier road on the 1881 Census.

Thank you
Paulette

I have been searching for my great x 2 grandmother for ages now. Thanks to the wonderful people here I was able to find her death certificate and children all out in India.

I have been doing my family tree and have no idea how to find her before 1880.

What I have so far:
Ellen McGeary (spelt on marriage certificate, death record and husbands service record)
She got married in Feb 1880 to Joseph Travis in Medway, Kent
She was 21 years old in Feb 1880
She lived in Pier Road, Gillingham
Her Dad was Thomas MGeary - professions = pensioner
Witness was Jane McGeary

Joseph and Ellen moved to Pakistan in 1881 and she died there in Nov 1896
There are 3 records I found for an Ellen Mc Geary on Ancestry and find my past ( I have both subscriptions)
1. Scotland - I checked this and it is not her
2. Wales - but father is different
3. New York - could be, but no record of her arriving here.

Please can you help me as I would love to know more about her.

Thank you, no wonder we couldn't find her.  I have taken down the British library archive reference.
I will also try and see if St Patricks church in Karachi is still in existence.
