Midlothian / Re: Thomson Leith 1851 Census
« on: Monday 11 July 11 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi thock,
It's been a few years since I last searched for my paternal family tree. Another researcher has identified the likely parents of my g-g-grandfather, Thomas Thomson, but that is as far as I have got so far.
As for Edinburgh blacksmiths, there is quite a lot of information on the internet, particularly if you search under Edinburgh burgesses. I was not able to find any reference to my ancestor, but you might have more luck with yours. Unfortunately, the surname Thomson in Scotland is as common as Smith is in England, so it's been difficult to find unequivocal evidence of my family. The site http://www.electricscotland.com/history/records/index.htm is quite helpful.
However, in September I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh to continue the search and will be looking again at apprentice records. I'll keep a note of the names you mention and will let you know if I find anything interesting.
It will be my first trip to Edinburgh, so I'm looking forward to visiting some of the places that have featured in my research.
Regards,

Hi Marlain,
Great to hear from you.
Happy to share what information I have about the Thomson family.
I have still not managed to get further back than George's father, Thomas, but I do have a great deal more about the family from about 1850 onwards.

Thanks Nell,
I'm going to assume the widow Janet was from Liberton near Edinburgh, since everything points to that.
After all, the enumerator originally wrote Libberton, but this was crossed out and a "Y" written in, indicating Janet was born somewhere in Midlothian.
Thanks again for your interest.

Thank you John,

You're right, it does look like Libberton but, someone correct me if I'm wrong, isn't Libberton near Glasgow whereas Liberton is next to Leith/Edinburgh?

It seems a bit strange that most of this Thomson family are from the Edinburgh area, except the widow Janet from Glasgow. It's possible the census-taker simply miss-spelled Liberton as Libberton, but as yet I have no way of checking.

Thanks again for taking a look and for your opinion.

Midlothian / 1841 Census Handwriting
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 02:33 BST (UK)  »
The 1841 Scottish census for Leith contains a reference to one of my ancestors, Thomas Thomson, 20, Blacksmith Journeyman.
The actual image shows his birthplace crossed out and replaced by the general "Midlothian"connotation.

Can anyone decipher what the actual birthplace was?

Similarly for the other Thomson family members.
Janet, widow, looks like Liberton?
Janet, 4, looks like Leith?

Any 1841 handwriting experts out there who could help?
Any opinions appreciated.

Thank you Jessden. That was very helpful.

Since first posting this thread, I've confirmed a lot of information about my g-g-grandparents, Thomas Thomson and Elizabeth Glen. I now know Thomas was a Leith blacksmith and he married Elizabeth at St. Cuthbert's on January 1, 1844. Their address at the time of their marriage was Storrars Land, Hillhousefield, Bonnington.

Information from 1841 lists Thomas as a blacksmith journeyman and his address as Smiths Land Fox Lane, South Leith. Unfortunately, I have not yet figured out the names of Thomas's parents. Other Thomsons living with Thomas in 1841 include Janet, a widow aged about 60-65, Alexander, an apprentice engineer aged about 15-20, Jessie (14), and Janet (4).
It seems highly unlikely that 4-year old Janet would be the daughter of the widow Janet, but Thomas, Alexander and Jessie could be the widow Janet's children. I think the widow Janet was born in Liberton.

I've searched extensively through the census and BMD data but can't seem to find any definitive evidence pointing to Thomas's parents. I've emailed the National Library of Scotland to request help in finding blacksmith apprentice records for Leith, which may show more information about Thomas, including the identity of his parents.

I did find an extremely good 1822 map of Leith that shows street names and property ownership, so I can see where places like Bonnington, Hillhousefield, Fox Lane, Elbe Street and Pilrig House are located. I believe Elizabeth Glen worked at Pilrig House.

With your local knowledge, can you suggest any lines of research that could identify Thomas Thomson's parents?

Thank you, that's very helpful.
What was the source of that information?

Incidentally, I have now confirmed that Elizabeth Thomson's maiden name was Glen.
The family were in Burntisland at the time of the 1851 census, no doubt because Thomas had found work in the shipyards.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / George Thomson/Thompson
« on: Thursday 29 June 06 21:42 BST (UK)  »
I'm searching for the descendants of George Thompson/Thomson and his spouse Annie Elizabeth.

George was born in Scotland in 1846 and moved to England in 1857. He was a boilermaker/riveter. He was born George Thomson, but when he moved to England the name may have been corrupted to Thompson.

George and Annie had, as far as I know, ten children: Tom, George, Nixon, David, Frederick, James, William, Martha, Annie and Bella (Isabella).

I believe that for much of their married life, George and Annie lived in Drypool, Kingston-Upon-Hull.

I have a lot more information about George but what I have mentioned so far should be enough to identify him.

Is anyone else researching this family or can anyone help me with any information about George?

I'm especially interested in learning if he had any uncles. The 1891 census mentions an Uncle Elren/Elven, but I can find no other records for this person, in Scotland or England.

Our verbal family history says that George and his siblings came down from Scotland in 1857, along with his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Thomson. Thomas is said to have been accompanied on the journey from Scotland by three brothers, at least one of whom settled in Yorkshire and became a publican. I believe one of Thomas's brothers may have been called Alexander but other than this I cannot find any more information.

I think George's father, Thomas, may have remarried a Margaret Wallis in the 1870s/80s.

If any of this rings a bell with anyone then I'd love to hear from you.

Midlothian / Apprentice Records - Edinburgh/Leith
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 18:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the apprenticeship records for two of my ancestors.
Thomas Thomson, born about 1820, lived in Leith and was a blacksmith's apprentice.
Thomas's brother, Alexander Thomson, born about 1826, also of Leith, is listed as an Engineer apprentice.
Does anyone have access to Edinburgh/Leith apprentice records for the period 1830s/1840s?

Any other information on Thomas Thomson(1820-1900) and his spose, Elizabeth Glen, also welcome.
