Hi Bettyanne, thank you for your prompt reply. I am sorry that you are currently unable to continue with your research. I have visited the National Archives and have a little more information. I found confirmation that my great grandfather had attended the Hibernian Military School in Dublin. He joined aged 10, in 1869. The school was for children of military personnel either orphaned or with parents serving overseas. I could not find service records for his father, John Hall, born in Quebec in 1827 so started looking at muster records and payrolls. I confirmed that he was a sergeant and member of the band with the 39th foot in 1851, stationed in Newry, Ireland. Also in Bermuda in 1861 where he was promoted from sergeant to drum major on the 12/11/1861. Unfortunately I ran out of time but intend to return to check further payrolls to establish his movements with the 39th. I will update you regarding anything I can confirm.
