Also, if you want to be picky, avoid using the JPEG file format to save them.
May I ask, Ray, why you suggest avoiding JPEG? What would you suggest as an alternative?

Thanks!

The decision whether or not to hold an inquiry is the P.M.'s.

I see that as being a problem - he seems to think this is no big deal, as he wanted the issue closed last Friday as Matt Hancock had apologised.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Street Name in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 08 June 21 17:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi Boo,

That sounds plausible, many thanks for such a prompt reply!

The lady's name was Florence Todd, she was 27 when she travelled to Canada in 1925 so she was born in 1898. She married my great uncle Gilbert Calderhead (my grandmother's brother) the day after arriving in Canada, if my research is correct!

Sadly they both died of scarlet fever in 1930, I believe ...

ADDED the ship was SS Athenia, sailed from Glasgow to Quebec - see further attachment.

Thanks again,
John

Hi All,

I'm trying to decipher a street or house name on a passenger list from 1925 - my great uncle's fiancée travelled to meet him in Canada.

As luck would have it there's a big black line right through the one record I want - I wonder if anyone who knows the area, or is more proficient with photo editing software can decipher it. I tried creating a negative but that didn't help me either.

My guess is it reads:
Father - James Todd
xxxxxxhill
Bishopbriggs

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Renfrewshire / Re: Elephant in Paisley Museum

At least in Paisley you had a full lion.
Unless I'm havering I think the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock had half a lion in a glass display - the top half! Poor soul!
Maybe I should start another thread to see if my memory is correct!  ;D
Looby
Hi Looby,

I'm coming somewhat late to this thread but I can confirm you're not havering! I grew up in Kilmarnock and clearly remember the lion. As you said it was just the front half of it, but as a wee boy I was slightly scared of it!

Cheers,
John

Thanks everyone for such prompt replies - it hadn't occurred to me it could be the time but that makes sense!

Consider this one closed!

Regards
John

PS I will contact Scotland's People about the quality, thanks too for that suggestion.

Hello all,

Can anyone decipher the street name of this address please? For reference I am pretty sure the rest of it reads:

Mary Erskine Strang

1879
September Thirteenth
xxxxxxxxx
Crossmyloof
Parish of Cathcart

John Strang
Grocer
Maria Lamont Strang
MS Millar
1876 February 15th
Maryhill

I wonder if the xxxxx part is "something hill"? I have looked at maps but I'm none the wiser. So if anyone has any thoughts please let me know - many thanks in advance!

Regards
John

Australia / Re: Descendants of Janet MacLean (née Jamieson) to Adelaide?
« on: Monday 24 June 19 08:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi shume and Sue,

Thanks for your replies. My grandmother was only 41 when she died - born 1894, died 1935. She married Archibald MacLean in 1929, in Glasgow. It was her daughter (my Mum's half-sister) who emigrated to Australia.

Again I realise this is very limited information - as I'm only a beginner I may find more as my research progresses!

Thanks again,
John

Australia / Descendants of Janet MacLean (née Jamieson) to Adelaide?
« on: Friday 21 June 19 13:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for any information on descendants of my grandmother Janet MacLean (née Jamieson) from Kilmarnock, Ayrshire - she died in 1935 but I believe she had a daughter who emigrated to Adelaide in the 1950's.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but any thoughts would be welcome.

Many thanks in advance
John Strang
