Lancashire / Re: Elizabeth Bond - where did she go?
« on: Thursday 29 December 22 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
There are quite a few burial records for
Elizabeth Bonds in the Manchester online Burial records search,
8 in total ,perhaps cross reference them with free BMD ,

example Manchester burials has Elizabeth Bond buried 2/6/1920 Southern Cemetery Unconsecrated ,buried with an Alice Knowles , grave 514, Lancashire BMD ,possibly have a death recorded Elizabeth Bond aged 63 years , Charlton on  Medlock Manchester 1920 this one you know isn't yours,

the other possible but doubtful as its consecrated ground is6/2/ 1936 Consecrated, Southern cemetery , her death is possibly Cheetham Manchester 1936 on Lancashire BMD aged 74

I'll check out the Cheetham death in 1936 in a bit more detail - and forgive me, but what is the difference between unconsecrated and consecrated? I know that in theory it's religiously blessed ground versus general non-religiously blessed ground, but in official records does it have a more specific meaning? such as Catholic, Anglican etc. Most of my ancestors in Manchester were buried in unconsecrated ground even if they were religious, so I assume it might have something to do with money, as they were mostly very poor.

I got back her mum Ann Larkin's death cert, died 1 Aug 1915 at 8 Frederick Street, but the informant was her son Patrick, so no updates on Elizabeth from there.

Still waiting on the death cert! Hopefully it'll give me an address to cross-reference with the 1921 Census if it's Eliz who signs it, but Ann had a large family, so could be anyone.

And yes thank you garstonite I did have that info! (Lan-opc is a lifesaver for this lot). She did have one more illegitimate child baptised in 1881

Baptism: 27 Nov 1881 St Peter, Greengate, Salford, Lancashire, England
Josephus Larkin filius Elizabeth Larkin
Born: 9 Nov 1881
Abode: 14 Clowes Street
Godparents: Lydia Price
Baptised by: Eduardo O'Connell

I've looked through Clowes St manually in the 1921 Census and haven't found any obvious relatives yet. I assume she dies between 1911 and 1921 but simply can't find a death record if that's the case  :-\

Lancashire / Elizabeth Bond - where did she go?

Hi all, looking to find a death record for my 3rd great grandmother, Elizabeth Bond (nee Larkin).

She was born at 30 Clowes St in Salford, Lancashire on 26 Feb 1863. Parents are Patrick Larkin, an Irish Catholic immigrant (1838-1905) and Ann Hulmes, a Salford girl (1840-1915).

She married lamplighter John Bond in St Stephen's Church Salford 31 Dec 1883. They had five children before his death in 1895. She moved back to Clowes St in Salford after his death to be with her family.

She had an illegitimate daughter (my 2xggm) in 1896, Clowes St. In the 1901 Census she lives at no 25 Clowes St. By 1911 Census she has moved away to 8 Frederick St, Bloom St, Salford where she lives with her children, siblings and widowed mother Ann. (only her brother Patrick lives here in the 1921 Census).

I can't locate her after this point. I have tried the 1921 Census but couldn't find her previously. There was only one possible death record I have found for her, registered in Chorlton in 1920 (which would explain why she wasn't in the census), but FindAGrave has a picture of this Elizabeth Bond's gravestone, which names her mother as Alice Knowles who died in 1920 - so she can't be the Elizabeth Bond i'm looking for.

I haven't found any remarriage for her after 1911. Does she die, move away, remarry and change her name etc? I'm not sure. Any help locating her after 1911 would be appreciated!!

1961 SF Directory
Ray Noble, seamn, r26 Norton
https://archive.org/details/polkssanfrancisc1961rlpo/page/1090/mode/2up?q=Norton

Did not see his name in 1954, 1959, 1967, 1971 or 1973 (just picking years out of the air to check).

I wonder if he owned the building and rented it when he was away for long periods, or if he knew the owner?  He was there in 1949 and 1961 (and possibly other years) but not in the above mentioned years.  Or, possibly he was there and just not listed in the directories.

Oh thank you for finding this! That's very possible. He could've been at sea during any of these times too, so he is hard to narrow down. I can also search for a Ray Noble now too, knowing he's been listed by this name before.

No worries, thank you so much for your help!
There is a Leo Yareshefsky (waiter at US Grant Hotel) on the San Diego directory in 1962, so it's confusing. Another found in Los Angeles in 1948, but no occupation given.

I can’t view the article.  I am guessing it was in San Diego, though.

It was published in the San Francisco Examiner and seems to be referring to a San Francisco 49ers / Detroit Lions game so not sure. Maybe this clipping helps (if it works!) He's mentioned in the bottom right.

I think there actually were two Leos in San Francisco at the same time.  I will look again.  Also, I did see a Leo who was a waiter but I’m not sure if it was in San Francisco or San Diego.  Be back in a few moments.

Ah I found the article I was remembering. Stadium Club head waiter does sound promising.

…Jewel is mentioned again in his obituary in the San Francisco Examiner:

"Raymond L Noble, loving nephew of Jewel Alvers, dear friend of Leo Yareshefsky, member of MC&S. Funeral Wed Mar 7 1pm DRISCOLL'S MORTUARY CHAPEL 22nd Street Internment Woodlawn Memorial Park."

Jewel was in no way a relative of Leslie as far as we know.
It's known that he was a gay man who never married and was a member of the Marine Cooks and Stewards Union in California. Leo Yareshefsky is believed to be a possible partner of his.

I wonder if Leo moved to California first (if this is the correct Leo).

Leo Yareshefsky, born 1915, New York
Died 1991, San Francisco

Good catch, it's quite possible they met in New York. I don't imagine there were many Leo Yareshefsky's in San Fran at the time so it's very likely him. Thanks already for your help everyone. I believe I found a newspaper article some time ago that mentioned a Leo Yareshefsky being a waiter (but can't find it now. D'oh). If anyone has found an article saying something similar please do let me know!
This would make sense as Leslie was also a waiter.

And thank you Sandra, my tree is pretty hefty haha, this is why i'd like to dig up as much as I can on Leslie. Once he moved overseas the family knew nothing really about him. Family source says he wasn't spoken about because of his sexuality, which is terribly sad. Seems people like Jewel and Leo hold a small key to figuring out more about him.

United States of America / Englishman in San Francisco - any info lookup?

Researching a family member named William Leslie Pye Noble (born 24 Jan 1917 in Scarborough England).
He was a merchant seaman who began his life at sea circa 1935. He was a steward and did dozens of crossings between the UK and NYC from around 1935-1949. He moves permanently to San Francisco by the end of 1949 and remains there until his death in 1973.
He worked aboard the Queen Mary and was supposedly involved in the New York black market in some way, and it's believed that's what prompted his sudden move to California.

His naturalization petition made on 25 Feb 1949 states his address in SF as 26 Norton St, San Francisco, California. On this petition he changes his name to RAYMOND LESLIE NOBLE.

He makes many crossings between California and Hawaii from 1949 into the 1960s, and appears to become a naturalised citizen in 1961. One of his witnesses is a Real Estate worker named Jewel Alvers, of 4398 Mission St, San Francisco. Jewel is mentioned again in his obituary in the San Francisco Examiner:

"Raymond L Noble, loving nephew of Jewel Alvers, dear friend of Leo Yareshefsky, member of MC&S. Funeral Wed Mar 7 1pm DRISCOLL'S MORTUARY CHAPEL 22nd Street Internment Woodlawn Memorial Park."

Jewel was in no way a relative of Leslie as far as we know.

I was wondering if any other info could be found about him in the USA? Censuses, directories, newspaper articles, etc. He's a bit tricky to pin down as being a merchant seament he was back and forth between both the UK and New York, and later San Francisco and Hawaii, endlessly. I'm hopeless at searching US records.

His time in the US is a large mystery and I would appreciate if anyone could see if he appears in any more US records, and help my family piece a little bit more of his life together. Any other info on Jewel Alvers or Leo Yareshefsky would also be interesting if it pops up. Uncovering his life is deeply important to many in my family.

Both Jewel Alvers and his other naturalisation witness, Josephine A Moran, appear to be members (?) of The Native Daughters of the Golden West.

Thanks so much,
Ali in England
