Tipperary / Re: Question regarding location of "Cashel Road"
« on: Wednesday 06 September 23 14:37 BST (UK)  »
Thanks very much for your reply!

I know where the road is, where it comes from and where it leads. What I wanted to confirm is the former name of the road. Was it, at one time (1830s and 1840s), known as Cashel Road?

Tipperary / Question regarding location of "Cashel Road"
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 17:22 BST (UK)  »
I have found the baptism registrations for children of my 2X grad grandparents in the Catholic Parish of Golden and Kilfeacle. Recorded place names include Golden, Cashel Road, and Sergeant's Lot.

I believe then that these various place names all refer to the same location -- the road between the towns of Cashel and Golden which forms the northern boundary of the townland of Sergeant's Lot. This road is now known as the national secondary road N74. My assumption is premised on the fact that my 2X great grandfather, Daniel Ryan (abt. 1800-1855) is recorded in both the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith's Valuation as living in the townland of Sergeant's Lot.

Can anyone confirm that the Cashel Road above is, in fact, the present-day N74?

Thank you!

Thanks - that fits into my reasoning re Jeremiah and the townlands.
There are several baptisms on the pages of those mentioned who have Abbey as their residence so that could be another way of checking.
As Sinann posts the shortening of the name makes sense.

The parish of Golden covers several civil parishes

Yes, just to make things interesting! I will check out some other records; thanks for the tip.

The Jeremiah Ryan mentioned in the 12 May 1834 record was married to Elize Anderson. He did, indeed, come from Sergeant's Lot fronting on Cashel Road where my 2X great grandfather, Daniel Ryan lived with his wife, Mary Lahey, and children. Both of these Ryans (along with a Charles Ryan) are found in Griffith's and the Tithe Applotment Books.

The Jeremiah that I am interested in appears in a baptism registration dated 4 February as follows: "John of Jeremiah Ryan & Alicia Dwyer, Sprs / James Coffy & Alicia Keating, Abbey."

The Jeremiah from Knocballynoe East certainly sounds promising: the townland is about 6.5 km. west of Golden and there are not only Dwyers but a Keating as well, albeit an immediate lessor. Today, there is a St. Patrick's Church, Kilfeacle in the vicinity that is part of the modern day parish of Golden & Kilfeacle.

I checked that out as well but there was nothing for Abbey. However, I will have to keep that link in mind for other searches. Thanks!

I checked the link and there is mention of Athassel North and Athassel South pertaining to the 1901 and 1911 censuses; these could be possibilities I suppose as they lie in the district electoral division of Thomastown which is not too far from Golden. Would those names have been in use in the 1830s?

Hello Nick,
I am researching my Kirwan, Cloak, Power, and Hogan ancestors from mid-19th century Wexford Town. I have been enjoying the thread immensely and look forward to seeing more!
