Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Trafford Surname
« on: Friday 13 December 19 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, In 1956 my late father and grandfather made an incredible chance discovery at Rushton Spencer church of St Lawrence, near Leek in The Staffordshire moorlands. The discovery was the burial vault of the De trafford family. The vault had been plundered centuries earlier. Apparently, the De Traffords owned nearby Swythamley Hall, I imagine in the 16th/17th century, My late father, Gary Bailey was first to enter the vault, and it featured in local newspapers.

If you visit 'Ludchurch; Rushton Church Grave Robbers' you can see the entire story, with press photos, and a posting from me with extra details. I do so hope you enjoy this story, and that it may shed light on your ancestry.

Just a point of interest. In 1956 , my late father and grandfather made a chance discovery whilst carrying out maintenance work at Rushton Spencer church of St Lawrence. The church is ancient, timber spired and absolutely uniquely beautiful.( You need to cross a field to reach it, a hard pathway means ordinary road cars can safely traverse. )

The discovery was that of the burial crypt of the DeTrafford family, beneath the church. If you visit 'Ludchurch; Rushton Church Grave Robbers' you can read the incredible story, with photos, and I have posted additional info at base of the page. ( The attached photo here is one of the recovered coffins, subsequently re - interred ).

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Bailey Families of Biddulph

I am descended from the 'blue clan' of Biddulph Moor Baileys. Bailey's Hill was apparently named by them. Other Bailey sects included the 'Pinkys' and 'Flattances'. A direct ancestor of mine was apparently William 'Big Bill' Bailey, a cattle dealer. I myself have a darkish complexion and dark brown eyes, but have no idea if I am remotely descended from Saracen stock.

Just as a point of interest, my late father and grandfather made an amazing chance discovery at nearby Rushton Spencer Church in 1956. The whole incredible story is at 'Ludchurch; Rushton Spencer Grave Robbers' ( I have posted additional info at page base ).

:)Hi, I am apparently descended from the 'Blueys', the 'blue clan' of Biddulph Moor Baileys. Apparently other clans were the 'Pinkies' and the 'Flattances'. ( This knowledge comes from research carried out by my late Dad, before the days of the web. ) My ancestors had their own hill...Bailey's Hill on Biddulph Moor.We were descended from 'Big Bill Bailey', who was apparently a cattle dealer, I have no idea on dates. I am clueless re genes, but I do myself have a darkish complexion and dark brown eyes, as did my late Dad Gary Bailey.
My great Grandfather Wilfrid 'Bluey' Bailey was Under Manager at the Victoria Colliery, Brown Lees, until 1939]An incredible chance discovery was made in 1956 by my late Father and Grandfather at nearby Rushton Spencer St Lawrence Church........they accidentally discovered the previously plundered burial vault of the De Trafford family beneath the church , during maintenance work. For the full story, including photos, visit 'Ludchurch; Rushton Church Grave Robbers', and you will see my post at the base of the page.( The attached photo is one of the recovered coffins )
