I do know that many people's trees claim Grisipol but I'm not sure if it's really known that his son Alexander is the same Alexander we see coming to America?  IF YOU WANT, you should ask our Clan MacLean DNA Project main admin if he knows more about this line. macleandnaproject@gmail.com

We tried once to prove out a tree that someone in the project to Grisipo had but it didn't prove out so i know he has done some research..  Our admin, Duncan McLean also knows and has talked to the clan 'historian" Bristol-MacLean when necessary.  He may or may not be able to help but it's worth a shot.

Hi Kevin, have you considered taking the ancestry.com DNA test and building as complete of a tree as you know of (even with cousins, aunts and uncles?)  I am a volunteer with the Clan MacLean DNA project over at familytreeDNA .com and we often suggest to descendents who don't have the surname to try to find ANY male MacLean who is a close DNA match in ancestry.com to then test their Y DNA and go farther back in time.  Our volunteer administrators can help you both on ancestry.com (if you give them rights and are stumped how to proceed) and then of course, in familytreedna.com to suggest options that MIGHT help you get farther back. It's just an idea for you.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is an active post or not but I wanted to respond with an idea for you.  We have several MacLeans from Uist (and elsewhere) in the Clan MacLean DNA Surname Project at familytreedna .com.  You would have to test a male of your MacLean line... it can even be a very distant male cousin or uncle, not of your direct line.  If you don't know of any, then we often suggest doing ancestry.com dna test, and building a tree with all the aunts uncles and cousins you can find... ancestry has very cool tools to help you build out that tree and if you did into your matches' trees you can often tell if someone is a recent MacLean who may know of a male that you can test in your line.  Just a suggestion.  Write to us at macleandnaproject at gmail.com.  All administrators are just volunteers with no interest in this financially.  In fact, we OFTEN will recommend tests from other companies as we learn more about your goals and your line.  We have identified clusters in Ireland versus Scotland in various geographic areas and have 3 testees with credible evidence to the chiefly line.  Our goal is simply to learn more about MacLeans from all over the world and ideally to help connect cousins and prove out important lines (even NPE lines) of MacLeans. Everyone who is a MacLean of any spelling is welcome.

It sounds like your John McLean is fairly recent traceable forward and you might have close MacLean male relatives you can find to take a Big Y test?  It's just a suggestion, depending on how much you want to trace back that line.  The Clan MacLean DNA project can help you figure out who to test and what test to take.  Write to macleandnaproject at gmail.com if you are interested in learning more about what this would and would not do to help with your research.

Do you have the surname MacLean or are you related through a maternal line?  The reason I ask is that the MacLean DNA project over at family tree dna now has several tests from this era in Uist... one who did go to Australia or New Zealand I think.  If you have the surname MacLean, I encourage you to write to macleandnaproject at gmail.com and find out more about the project.

Oh, and by the way... if you don't know of any male MacLeans of your line (can be a very distant cousin, or uncle... you should all match in Y DNA), then what we usually recommend is an ancestry.com DNA test with as much information built into your tree as possible.  Ancestry will suggest matches, by name and you might find a male MacLean cousin that they you can test and follow the Y test as his administrator on FTDNA... And if you do have cousins who also SHARE the MacLean side (even a female cousin), then you can "triangulate" and look for MacLeans in common to further fine-tune that ancestry.com matching process.  The closer you are to your MacLean ancestors, the more easy it is to find that male MacLean connection.

Bagpipe, yes it would be a Y DNA test.  We have several to match with in the Kintyre area as well as on mull.  Including a few with credible evidence of relation to chiefs.  Yes, you don't know if the male line is unbroken until you test but it's possible.  And even if it IS broken, sometimes people find out other things, interesting things, that happened with one of their ancestors.  We have many broken lines but everyone is still a MacLean and still part of the project.

Finding out someone is actually a McDonald or Campbell from WAY back is actually fascinating given the knowledge we have of ancient clan history.  We can definitely see clustering to find who is originally Irish versus Scottish and see clusters within Ireland and various areas of Scotland.  Only the Big Y test is worth taking, the other ones give false matches.   I hope you consider testing because we REALLY want MacLeans from Scotland to test so that we can learn more!

Hello, I just joined this forum and I'm really surprised I knew nothing of it until now.  I'm a co-admin of the Clan MacLean DNA project over at familytreedna .com.   We NEED more people with known Scottish ancestry to join the project.. especially those with known connections to chiefly lines.  We have 3 so far who have credible documentation back to chiefly lines but there is not enough to really understand what is going on... does Lochbuie have different DNA markers than Duart?  Etc...  It appears from this post we have a few MacLeans posting on this thread?  Are any of you in the project?  I'm trying to piece together a bit about the lines discussed here so that I can do a better job over there on the project.

Hello, I just found this forum and joined simply because I wanted to find out if you have tested your family lines New Zealand to Coll with the Clan MacLean DNA Project at familytreedna . com .  It requires a male MacLean of your line to prove the line.  We do have many members from New Zealand and one in particular comes to mind.  His line goes back to Coll and he has a maternal connection to the clan chiefs through the Lochbuie line (I think).  if you are interested, you should reply to us, depending what you already know about your line, we can suggest a few testing options for you which might save you some money.
