I've also seen in the same register, but on another page, it clearly marked as s/h.  :)

2
I have been informed that it did refer to someones build although different abbreviations were used.  Usually Prop or Slender for example.

3
Here are the others above on the same page - I think I've even seen an Olh ?? although it could just be the handwriting?

sth. could be s/l. - a variation of the sl. for slightly in the 2nd entry. Does this suggest that he had a slight astigmatism?

Hi,

Thanks for your response - I hadn't thought of that at all tbh - I've just noted that it actually has his build down as Sl Bld (which I originally thought was slightly bald lol) - so I'm wondering if Sth is actually SH which could mean, sound health - or even just Sth - short height lol - the rest of the record is dotted by clearer Sl, St, Slh

Hi to all,

I've come across an ancestor's prison record and while I can understand most of what is being said on his physical description there is one that I'm unsure of - Sth?  The gentleman underneath has Sl - I presume, (but I'm not sure), that its to do with his build - I've seen Stout written as St but unsure as to what Sth is... Sl presumably "Slight"??  Any help would be much appreciated.

I have him as 5ft 3, Fresh (complexion), Dark Brown Hair, Hazel Eyes, Sth??, Oval (visage), aged 40 years and 6 months, scar on forehead and mole at left nostril?

Many tia

Michelle  :)

Free search of 1921 census
Macclesfield
John Hanaghan 1890 United States
Mary Hanaghan 1889 Macclesfield
Marjorie Hanaghan 1916 Macclesfield
Kenneth Hanaghan 1918 Macclesfield
John Hanaghan 1920  Macclesfield

Thank you for responding - I had an obvious glitch in my brain earlier today!  I even have a copy of the 1921 census I should have referred to!

Thanks you

Freebmd has
Births Jun qtr 1920
Hanaghan    John    mmn Fairhurst    Macclesfield    8a   See D 22
Births Dec qtr 1922
Hanaghan    John    mmn Fairhurst    Macclesfield    8a   184

This is what normally happens when a birth is registered late.  D22 refers to December qtr 1922 when the birth was registered.  If you look at the original page for 1920 the entry is probably hand written at the bottom.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?scan=1&r=143753989:9202&d=bmd_1694426109

ADDED If you follow that link then select the option to view the scan you will see the entry has been hand written at the bottom

Hi, thank you so much for your reply - I have the 1921 census but didn't think to look at it doh!  Itchy brain day/brain fog - a week on antibiotics and steroids for you lol.

Thanks for clearing it up!

Family History Beginners Board / John Hanaghan - Macclesfield
« on: Saturday 16 September 23 12:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a bit of a puzzler - John Hanaghan Snr and his wife Mary, (nee Fairhurst), had children in Macclesfield, Cheshire circa 1915 -1922 - Amongst them was one John Hanaghan, born and died in 3Q 1915 - Thats fine.

Then another John Hanaghan pops up in 1920 on FindMyPast index of births - no death record and not recognised on GRO - just an attached note on FindMyPast stating "See D1922".

Then there is also a listing for another John Hanaghan in 1922 - recognised on GRO and FindMyPast BUT - the trouble is, his sibling Kenneth was born in SQ1922 (on FindMyPast Index - and GRO) - so I am just wanting to clarify whether the second, "live" John Hanaghan was born in 1920 or 1922?

There were no other Fairhurst and Hanaghan marriages so I'm certain the children listed are all belonging to Mary Fairhurst and John Hanaghan Snr - was there a mistake, late registration???  How could they have two Hanaghan children born in 1922, one, Norman, registered in September 1922 and then the mystery 1920/1922 John in December Q1922?? Any advice would be brilliant as its making my brain itch!

Thanks in anticipation

Michelle
