I am trying to work out what sentence means in an excerpt from an 1899 book about the history of the parishes of Penboyr and Llangeler.  It's the sentence highlighted in purple in the attachment, which says "Mae swn diweddar yn yr enw hwn."  My mother in law speaks Welsh but it's a bit rusty from having lived in England for a long time, and she translated it as 'There is a recent sound in this name', which doesn't make sense to either of us in the context of the rest of the paragraph.  If anyone can shed any light it would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Boo, thanks for the reply, I got a similar result in a few different online translators and whilst I can get the gist of what it says, I can't work out what it actually is meant to mean!  Although you have a different translation for the last sentence from what I found, and yours makes sense so I will use yours instead.  Thanks again.

Hi there, we've been researching my husband's family tree and were hoping that someone might have some more information on part of his family that lived in Drefach.

We have gone back as far as Samuel Jones b1797 in Llangeler and his wife Margaret (nee Evans) b1801 in Penboyr, who married in Dec 1818 and lived at Trefach Mill/Felinfach in Drefach.  They had at least 11 children; William, David, John, Thomas, James, Titus, Anna/Hannah, Rachel, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sarah. 

My husband's family are descended from David, who is my husband's 3x great grandfather.

We have found quite a bit of information about Samuel and Margaret and most of their children, but have limited information on John and James. 

John appears on the 1841 Census in Drefach, but we can't find him for definite on the 1851 Census as there are too many other people of the same name and place and year of birth.  We can't find a marriage record, but he had a daughter called Margaretta who was born abt 1853 and died in Oct 1856 whilst living at Felinfach (although we can't find a birth record for her).  John died in Feb 1859 whilst living at Felinfach and is buried with his parents, sister Sarah and daughter at St Celer's Church in Llangeler.

James also appears on the 1841 Census in Drefach, and is on the 1861 Census living at Tredegar with his brother Titus.  However we can't find him on the 1851 or 1871 Censuses.  We haven't found any marriage records or records of any children.  He died in the autumn of 1873 whilst living at Trefach Mill/Felinfach, and is also buried at St Celer's Church.

If anyone has any information on John or James, or any other member of the family it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
