Lanarkshire / Re: Was this photo taken in Old Monkland Cemetery?

Thanks, Lodger. The names of those buried, in order, are Margaret Wilson, died 02 July 1936, William Young, died 05 Feb 1944, and Samuel Young, died 02 Dec 1950. It's Samuel named as the one erecting the stone, so I don't know if that means he bought the lair?

I'll check them out and get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks Lodger!

By the way, is your signature a list of research interests? I have a Torrance not far from Hamilton, Margaret Torrance (1789-1877), who died in Rosebank. I wonder if related?

It could be OM cemetery, the topography has changed a bit since the 1950s, the pit bing (slag heap) on the right has gone but if you send a name and date of death I will try to find out for you.

I would agree with Lodger that this is a photo taken from within OM Cemetery looking west towards Glasgow.

The wooded slope on the left is to the east of Aitkenhead Farm and the old Nackerty Road.  The bing referred to by Lodger, lay between Viewfield Road in Old Monkland, and the "old" A8 Edinburgh Road.  The bing which was part of the Kirkwood Oil Works and collieries existed into the late 1960's/early 70's when it was removed to provide an industrial site occupied by a "Marshall's Chunky Chickens" processing plant.  When this company ceased operations the site was extended to the west (the burn was part culverted) and eventually was occupied by the cinema complex that presently exists.

The value of local knowledge! Many thanks for sharing. I thought the slag heap was a natural hill so had been trying to spot it on Google maps with no luck (of course).

Could you not look up the names on those headstones to find out which burial ground they are in?

Is there a publicly-available resource for Lanarkshire burials? I've tried FindAGrave to no luck (for these particular names).

Hi everyone,

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone recognise the background of this photo being Old Monkland Cemetery? I appreciate it's small and unclear, but I'm hoping the hills in the background are distinctive enough to establish yes or no. It's a family grave, and the relative who gave me the photo says he thinks it's Old Monkland Cemetery, but can't be sure.

I don't know when the photo was taken, but it would have been after 1950.

Thanks for any help!

Other Countries / Barraclough search
« on: Tuesday 02 February 21 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find any information on Florence Beryl Barraclough who married a William George Bearcroft in 1917. I believe she was born in 1898. I am able to find her children but nothing about her parents. I believe her father was Albert Barraclough who was I have been told was born in England but moved to India and was a foreman on the GIP railway.
I have no information on Florences mother but I have been told she is of Spanish or Portuguese decent. Possible names have been told to be Jessica Pranze or Pereira.

I know that Florence had two sisters, Louisa or Luisa Beatrice and Mary Alberta. Again I have their marriage records but nothing else.

If anybody could help me piece some bits together I would really appreciate it!

I hadn't realised this topic was still getting posts!

Andrew Craig is given as Andrew Craig's father on the birth certificate, which also marks Andrew Jr as illegitimate. Margaret Buttler then had another illegitimate child with a man named Thomas Tierney (I found the paternity decree), then married John Berry and had a third child. All three children went by Berry, though Andrew reverted back to Craig as an adult.

Margaret never married Andrew Craig. The theory about the names getting mixed up on the certificate sounds plausible - it should read "reputed father Andrew Craig", mother Margaret Buttler, subsequently married to John Berry. Both Margaret Buttler and John Berry were still alive by the time Andrew got married, so it seems a strange mistake to make. Unfortunately I can find no record of father Andrew beyond the birth certificate.

I've attached Andrew's birth certificate if anyone's interested in taking a look.

Hm, that could make sense! Cheers!

Thanks all, reputed fits.

For those in the know, does it mean that it's known John Berry wasn't his biological father, and was just said to be, or does the reputed mean more "we think it was actually John Berry"?

Andrew's birth certificate declares him as illegitimate, father Andrew Craig. His mother married John Berry seven years after Andrew was born, so it's not like she could have snuck that one by him.

I'm also confused why she'd then say she was subsequently married to Andrew Craig. I thought initially to hide that son Andrew was illegitimate, but putting John Berry as the reputed father gives the game away.

Confusing!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Wha comes before 'Father' in this marriage cert?
« on: Wednesday 30 December 20 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Made the discovery today that my 2x great-grandfather was illegitimate. However, I may have realised this sooner had I taken a closer look at his marriage certificate. I can't work out what comes before 'father' in the entry for Andrew Craig - it reads "John Berry, general labourer (?? father)".

John Berry was not Andrew's biological father, that was the Andrew Craig his mother "subsequently" married (I'm not so sure she actually did just yet), but Andrew did take the Berry name while growing up. Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me work out what kind of father John Berry is described as, which might help me work out the family dynamic better.

Sorry for the bad crop, the attachment size limit is killer...
