Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Help needed with glitch on FTDNA

I think you can adjust the cM threshold for the matches on FTDNA FF

Ancestry filters out small segments. It may be the 40cM is made of 8- 5cM segments which would not show in their record. All the testing companies use different criteria for counting cM's. 23 and Me count the X chromosome. FTDNA uses smaller pieces in their total, etc.

Probably not a solid match for you if they don't match on Ancestry. You never know without some research...

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Leeds Method

You can use the Ancestry groups in a similar fashion. Create four groups. (or more) using their color dot codes. Leeds stresses that you work with 2nd cousins matching between 70cM to 200 cM. Go to your first match, select the match, and then shared matches. Use the group 1 color and add all these shared matches to the group. Go back to dna matches and look for the next match that is not in group 1. Repeat the process with the new match using group 2.

Dana has a blog and website and you should be able to watch a video on her method, perhaps on Youtube also Good luck

Did you pay for the use of their tools? It is a one time charge, I think 29 dollars and you have access to all their clustering tool, chromosome browser etc. You should still be able to view your matches without the fee, it is your DNA...

There is a distinction on the ethnicity projections from all the testing companies. They use common groups of individuals for comparison and the ethnicity estimates are based on where those groups reside "today". Not 100 years ago or 200 years ago, today. They are useful for matches more so than firmly establishing where your family originated. If you upload your dna to three different companies you will have three different origins....

If I understand what you are looking for is the shared matches on your paternal side and distinguishing them based on the maternal side. I assume you have created a group from the shared match of your first connection. You should be able to distinguish the different maternal lines as the cm match on one line will be roughly half the other line for the same generation of match. I assume you descend from Mr. X and one of the women, those matches will be roughly double the comparible match by generation from the other maternal line not connected to you.

I think Fleming is right on the relationship based on cm and generation. I am curious about Sunday's other 1st cousin mentioned at 398 cm match to you. Follow their trees, there is a shared match in there waiting for you. Have you run the auto clustering tool on my heritage?

Yes, I recommend beginning with ancestry dna test. They have the largest database of tested individuals. You can then download your dna file and upload it to My Heritage and FTDNA for free and expand your potential matches further. Ancestry has over 15 million tests.
