Thanks. I saw this some time back but it's had a lot added to it.

Many thanks. Oldham is just up the road but the friend of mine who lives up there and has been searching the registers themselves hadn't yet gone that way.

We know Hugh had about nine children in Ashton under Lyne, but the oldest we know of was born about 1828. Although we know his "wife's" name which is Sarah Walker, from later children's birt certificates, we've not yet found a marriage in Ashton, where Sarah comes from according to the 1861 and 1871 census, nor in surrounding areas. So we couldn't find Hugh or Sarah's fathers names by that route.

Thank you so much. I'm sure this must be the Hugh I'm looking for as he was also a coal miner like his father. I see Broughton is just Northwest of Wrexham. I've been looking for him for 30 years and now need to try to find out more about the family and its Welsh roots.

I'm trying to find the birth of Hugh Rogers who was living in Ashton under Lyne by 1828 but gives his date of birth as 1806 and place as Wrexham on 1851, 61 and 71 censuses. Please could anyone find him?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: James Leason

I got Mary's surname from Catherine's birth certificate in 1886 when her father is given as James.  Some of the later children are registered but I can't find any James around 1880 in Scarborough although I know there are three Roberts born in Scarborough in 1875, 76 ( who died) and 78. The one born in 1878 is the son of George on the 81 census.

John in Goole is still there in 1871. The proble I think is that he's a grocer's assistant and the James/John I'm looking for was a bricklayer/labourer.

Thanks. I've seen that and although it gives John as aged 8, it was in fact Robert. John was born in Oct 1893 and died in December.

LEESON, James    Head     Widower    M    64    1847    Bricklayers Labourer    Gt Driffd Yorksire

and separately

LEESON, Hannah    Wife    Married7 years    F    24    1887       South Shields Co Durham

This implies he was born earlier than 1850. I can find a John in 1849 but no James

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / James Leason

James John Leason was living in South Shields on the 1911 census but came from Great Driffield. He was born between about 1850 and 1860  and may have lived in Scarborough where his son James was born about 1877 and possibly Robert about 1878. He was a bricklayer. I can't find a birth that fits in the Driffield area and although "married" to Mary Cockrane there is no evidence of any marriage. I can't find him on the 1881 census and his birthplace is given as South Shields in 1891 and 1901 where he was living. His sons were James, Robert, John and David, daughters include Catherine, Sarah and Elizabeth.

Has anyone got anything in any likely East Riding registers which would pin him down?

Thanks. I had noticed those census returns but was put off by Nafferton rather than Driffield. Did William come from Driffield or is this a separate Nafferton branch of the family? Was William a son/grandson of Robert Leason of Driffeld?
