I wish I could afford the certificates to prove whether he is or isn't the right man I'm looking for.

I've also tried looking for his death, but haven't been able to find that either.

England / John Jones (born c.1861 Leicester)

I am currently searching for my great-great grandfather, John JONES.

The earliest confirmed record I have for him is his 1887 marriage to Caroline Ann WEEKS, in Chatham, Kent.  I can then trace him through from the 1891 census to the 1911 census, where he and his family resided in Kent.

From the census, he is born in abt 1861 in Leicester, Leicestershire.  From his marriage certificate his father is apparently also called John.

What I am searching for is about his life prior to his marriage in 1887, and when he died.

Delia "Watkins" whom you mention from 1911 was actually registered as Delia Elizabeth Bailey, mmn Punter, in Fulham, Mar qtr 1911.  It therefore looks as though Ada Watkins and Ada Punter are the same person, and that she was already in a relationship with William by 1911.  "Housekeeper" is often seen in the censuses as a supposed occupation for a woman cohabiting with, but not married to, the male householder.

Ada Punter, 18, had married labourer Robert Bartlett Watkins, 21, on 31 July 1904 (Ealing).  She may have been pregnant at the time; their daughter Lucy Annie Watkins was born 8 months later on 30 March 1905.

Robert appears to have emigrated to Canada within a few years of the marriage, and died there in 1958.

Where did you find that Delia Watkins was Delia E Bailey.  I can't see her mother's maiden name on the index

I don't think that it's them.  Franks date of birth was 28 Feb 1902 (source is his baptism entry on ancestry).

Thanks for everyone's responses so far.

Avm228 - yes, it's a typo on my part.  John Charles Bailey is the father of William Henry Bailey and the grandfather of Horace Bailey.

Regarding the Clever Green School - I am not aware of Horace or Frank attending that school.  Is there anything there about Jack/George?  I don't have an up to date subscription to Findmypast, which is probably why i have never looked there.

I so wish I had the money to buy more certificates or to travel to look at archives but alas I can't health and money don't allow me too.

Over the next few years the family moved to London and 4 more children arrived, Frank, John/George, Winnie and one other who I have yet to identify.  I have found the baptism information for Frank, John and Winnie.  I also have the birth certificate for John, which is interesting because he was baptised as George Hugh Shelley Bailey, but when they registered his birth the changed his first name to John.

Born   Baptised   Child’s name   Parent’s names   Residence & Father’s occupation
28th Feb 1902   16th Mar 1902   Frank   William & Elizabeth Bailey   50 Red Lion Street.
Gas Fitter
8th Dec 1904   23rd Dec 1904   George Hugh Shelley   William & Elizabeth Bailey   270 Northampton Buildings.
Gas Fitter
Both of the above took place at Clerkenwell St John.  I am yet to find details of the birth/baptism of Winnie/Minnie.

The birth certificate for John/George reads as follows:
•   Date and place of birth of birth: 8th December 1904 370 Northampton Buildings
•   Name: John Hugh Shelley
•   Sex: Boy
•   Name and Surname of father: William Henry Bailey
•   Name, surname and maiden surname of mother:  Lizzie Bailey formerly Marson/Manson
•   Occupation of father: gas fitter
•   Signature, description and residence of informant:  Lizzie Bailey, mother, 270 Northampton Buildings
•   When registered: 18th January 1905

Moving on to the 1911 census.  William is now a widower, the family has moved between 1901 and 1903 from Birmingham to London.  The family are residing at 74 Gallaway Road, Shepherds Bush.  Residing with the family is Ada Watkins, 24-year-old married house keeper and her 3 children, Lucy, Joseph and Delia
Name   Age   Occulation    Place of birth
William Henry Bailey   37 Widower   Gas Fitter   Birmingham, Lozells (?)
Horace Bailey   10      Birmingham, Ladywood
Frank Bailey   8      Clerkenwell, London
John Bailey   6      London Westminster
Winnie Bailey   4      London Westminster

Between 1913 and 1919, William had 4 children with a lady named Ada Punter.  On the birth certificates of 2 of their children, Sophia May Bailey (the oldest) and Charles Robert Bailey (the youngest), Ada lists herself as Ada Bailey, formerly Punter – suggesting they (her and William) were married.

They did get married – but not 1920, when Charles Robert was 11 months old!  The marriage took place at the Register Office, Camberwell on April 10th 1920.  William Henry Bailey, a 46 year old widower, gas meter tester married Ada Punter, a 32 year old spinster.  Both were residing at 11 Middle Street, Peckham.  William gives his father as John Charles Bailey (Engineer’s fitter), Ada gives her father as Joseph Punter (Waterman).

Horace married Doris Margaret Kate Hoare on on 26th Nov 1924, at St John Baptism, Southend on Sea, Essex.

Horace, a 26 year old bachelor, working as a Mariner (Navy), residing at HM Barracks, Chatham.  Father is William Henry Bailey, a gas fitter.  Doris Margaret Kate Hoare, a 25 year old spinster residing at 66 Halprin (?) Avenue, Southend on Sea.  Her father is James Reuben Hoare, a master plumber.

If you’ve made it this far, take a deep breath.  I know it’s a lot of information.

But despite the research, I am yet to establish:
•   What happened to Annie Bailey, nee Martin?
•   Did William Henry Bailey marry Elizabeth Manson/Marson (the mother on John Hugh Shelley Bailey’s birth certificate).  If he did, when?
•   Could Annie and Lizzie be two of the same person?
•   Who is my Great grandfather’s mother – Annie or Lizzie?

Thanks again

Roz

England / Who is my great great grandmother
« on: Friday 17 March 17 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies for this super long post, but I am going to try and including/mention as much support material/sources as I have found to date to back up what I am researching.

Anyway, let’s start with the basic information – I am researching my great-great grandparents on my mum’s mum side.  Specifically, I am trying to workout once and for all who my great-great grandmother is.

My great grandfather, Horace Bailey, was born c. 1898 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.  I say circa, because his birth was never registered (apparently mum was sick and dad was away in the military so they ‘never got round to it’).  I have a birthdate of 26th September 1898, which was the date of birth he gave when he ensilsted in the Royal Marines.

Horace married in 1924, to Doris Margaret Kate Hoare.  He gave his father as John Charles Bailey, who’s occupation was a gas fitter.  (more details of this below)

I have search the National Archives, Horace and his son Ken went to Chatham House, when it held the archives, to try and find his certificate but never found it.  The was a Sydney Horace Bailey, born 17th December 1898 in Birmingham, but that is not him – his (Sydney Horace) parents are Philip Henry Bailey and Ada Bailey formerly Mason.  Philip was a Brass Worker (Journeyman).

In 1894, I have a marriage between William Henry Bailey (20 year old bachelor) and Annie Martin (26 year old spinster). The marriage took place at the Register Office in Birmingham, in the county of Birmingham.  William gave his father has John Charles Bailey and Annie gave hers as Joseph Martin.  William and John Charles gave their occupations as gas fitter, Joseph was a chandelier fitter.  William was residing at Curzon Hall, Suffolk Street, and Annie at 58 Suffolk Street, Birmingham.  Witnesses were Elizabeth Brown and Charles Derwitt.

The earliest record I have for Horace is the 1901 census.  William, his wife Lizzie and Horace are boarding with the Suckling family in Basall Heath, Birmingham, England. The record reference is RG13, Piece 2813, Folio 137, Page 7

It appears, from printing out census and putting them in order - Horace was the oldest child and born prior to the 1901 census, John, Frank and Winnie (a daughter) were all born between 1902 and 1910
