I'm quite grumpy
about the Ancestry project at the moment. I have transcribed and indexed for other sites, going way back to the early days of FreeBMD, but I've only been using the Ancestry software for one day and I find it quite unforgiving and tricky to use as a beginner.
Of course, if I persevere ...IF! ... it will become easier as they all do, but my main problem with it is it seems to be impossible to go back to something if you find you've been entering data in a way that doesn't conform strictly to their rules. It was also slightly off-putting to find my first attempt had been rated as "accuracy needs some improvement", but with no way to revisit what I'd done to help me improve.
And transcibing is a pretty altruistic occupation I'd say. It would be good to get some reward for the hours spent banging away on a keyboard. 10% off a year's subscription to ancestry? Try working out what that equates to per hour! I've 'keyed' for scotlandsplaces, for instance, and at least you get to view the whole set of material you are working on, and the community is really user-friendly too. I never felt like I was in an exam, for goodness sake.
So, I'm not sure if I'll be bothering to go back to ancestry. I'd like to find more 'non-profit making' projects to work on. Any ideas?
