Mayo / Re: Rush Family from Mayo

He looks like the brother of Martin's son Dominick's wife. Dominick married Catherine Henry of Culmore.

Just linking the marriage-

Dominick RUSH married Catherine HENRY on 26 January 1893 at Kilmovee RC Church.

Difficult.
It looks as though it could be the same man but there are a lot of Martins. :-\
Birth

Thomas - father Martin of Magheraboy

Marriage

Same details but Martin deceased.

There is a death here for Martin Rush, Magheraboy in 1898. He is a widower.

Death for Bridget Rush - informant Patrick, son. Is this the wife of Martin, though?

Thomas and Bridget (Griffin) in 1911

Is this what you have? Do you have any further information?

Hello Heywood

Thank you for the reply. I had some of that information.
I have been doing more checking and I think I have Thomas Rush in correct family.
We know he was alive in 1911 in Ballinrumpa and I have found the other 2 Martin's of Magheraboy each with their Thomas's in 1911.
The Martin Rush you found a death for in 1898 is the correct one. Informant was Martin Henry. He looks like the brother of Martin's son Dominick's wife. Dominick married Catherine Henry of Culmore.
The Bridget that died with an informant Patrick does not look like Martin's wife Bridget but I have found a Bridget Rush who died on 28 February 1892 married with a son William as the informant.
I will go with this for now.
Thanks again

Hello
I am currently looking at Thomas Rush born 1878 who was the son of Martin Rush and Bridget Meehan of Magheraboy in County Mayo, Ireland. Do you know if it was this Thomas Rush who married Bridget Griffin of Ballinrumpa, Kilmovee, Mayo in 1902.
Thanks.

As a point of interest to learn more about the life of early settlers to Canada do checkout the Archives at the Province Records Office and the University websites.

My own Grandfather emigrated in 1903 to Saskatchewan as part of what is known as the Barr Pioneers.  They were each given a large plot of land to farm and after five years they received the title to the land.  Years later the families recorded their lives and a book was produced, it makes fascinating reading.

Hence just a though that something similar may exist for what life was like for James and his family.
Hello
Thank you for the link. I will look through and see if I can find anything.

Hi,

As you mentioned, James served in WW1, b. Dec. 27/1885, there is a WW1 service file, you can view it here, 54 pages, it is slow to load.
https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B4332-S045

Mentioned within the file, wife Catherine Higgins, parents John and Margaret Higgins, Simond St., both still living and 3 children James aged 10, Albert Addington 7, and George Henry 5.  On page 28, there is a death notification, the date is hard to make out. It looks like 1929 but must be 1979, as he was the informant on this mother's death in 1932 and assumed still living with wife Catherine's death in 1954.

New Brunswick deaths are not available/privacy protected after 1969.

Hello dbree
Thank you very much for the link to the War Papers for James Higgins.
As you say it mentions his wife Catherine (Kathleen) and three of his children at 149 Millidge Avenue, St John.
The War papers are very interesting. He even went to Liverpool where I was born. I am now in Australia.
It mentions his parents at Simond Street, St John, N.B. so the Death Record for John Henry Higgins on 7 May 1922 is the correct one. I have since looked on google and saw Adelaide Street was off Millidge Avenue.
I read the Date of Death on the Veterans Affairs Death Notification for James Higgins as 3 May 1979 and he died at West St John Community Hospital.
I have since found that John and Margaret Higgins and two children Charles and William were living next to Margaret's mother Martha Connell (who was Darrah or Darragh) and a few children. Martha Connell was a Widow. That was on the 1881 Canada Census.
So it appears that the correct records have been found.
I will now put them into Date order.
Thank you once again.
Take care
Pat

Hi,

There is a death of Catherine Higgins June 17, 1954, husband James Higgins, father Thomas Corrigan, mother Elizabeth Nicholson. Her status is married not widowed, so we can assume that James was still living in 1954.

Hello dbree
Thank you very much for that Death Record.
Now we have Elizabeth Corrigan's maiden name Nicholson.
According to earlier Census Thomas and Elizabeth were from Ireland.
I will look at your other reply now.

Hello Sandra
Thank you very much for that information on 192 Millidge Avenue.
Looks like that address was the home of James Higgins and family. I have found this morning that his brother William John Higgins lived at 174 Millidge Avenue.
I am not so sure if the John Henry Higgins who died on 7 May 1922 is the correct John. William was living in Adelaide Street?
I will check everything out.
Thanks again.

This might be Margaret and children in the 1891 census in St John...James is as Jas.

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1891&op=img&id=30953_148106-00173

Records for Nathan and George indicate their parents are John and Margaret Higgins but no maiden name for Margaret.

However, if I have found the correct family, Nathan's entry on Find a Grave gives a mother's maiden name to contemplate.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/142711211/nathan-augustus-higgins

Anyway, food for thought.
