Family History Beginners Board / Re: Porter
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Suttontrust and Cal241 for your replies. I don't have a great deal of info on Matthew Porter, except that he was my grandfather. The dates I have come from census's, and all other came from my late mother. By the 1901 census Matthew was married to Jane (nee Ford) and was living at Palace Mews, London, where their 5 daughters were born, Alma, Isobel, Ethel, Florence & Fanny. (Florence was born 8th August 1909) After the birth of Fanny, the family moved to Rodbourne, Wilts, and there were 2 sons. James & Thomas. I'd love to find out more about his roots, as I have info on Jane already. Thanks again for your interest. Lizzyboo

Hi Anne-Marie,
I have been so lucky to find some very helpful people on rootschat. I've discovered that my grandmother was born in Torryburn, Fife to Thomas Ford and Jane Gordon - Her grandparents were Andrew Gordon & Jane Paterson - this is where the Paterson connection comes in. This Jane was born in 1847. That's all I know so far as I haven't got around to checking out the webs I've been given. I'll let you decide if there's a connection!

Thank you Dorothy and Irret for your help. I was beginning to think my mum had been telling me porkies and that my grandmother didn't really exist!! You've made me a very happy person. Thank you very much

My grandmother was born in Fife in 1871 - her name was Jane Paterson Ford - as I believe children were given bothe the maiden name of the mother and the surname of the father it's possible that she is a decendant of the Paterson family you are seeking. I can't find any record of her either until after her marriage when she appears on the 1901 census in her married name of Porter. Sorry this is not much help, but so you know you are not alone with your brick wall!!

Thanks - I have found her on the 1901 census, by which time she has married and her name becomes Porter.

Thank you very much for that info. My grandmother may well have been in Surrey at some time. I don't have any further info on her - parents names etc.. - this is what I'd like to find out. I believe that the scottish traditionally gave their children the mothers maiden name followed by the married name, so my grandmother may have been known as Ford. Anyway, thanks again for the info

HELP! I'm trying to find a record of my grandmother. Her name was Jane Patterson-Ford, born in Fifeshire 1871 - Married Matthew Porter pre 1901 and lived at Buckingham Palace Mews until around 1915, then Rodbourne, Wiltshire. Died July 1941 and is buried in Box (Wilts), but I can't find any record of her before her marriage. Would love to hear from anyone who can help.
