Travelling People / Re: drakeley - fairground/coal merchants

We may have a few coincidences..... I have both the name of Drakeley and Elstone. My Elstone's were in the Hampshire,Sussex & Surrey borders. My Great Grandfather, John Matthews (1875 - 1931) was the Great Grandson of William Matthews and Bethsheba Drakely from Nuneaton. Like you, there was also a hint of perhaps a gyspy connection. Can we share notes? and see if there is actually a connection?

Anyone else researching this family.

Ian C

Yes! -

My interest is through the David Blaiklock's mother who was Ann Butcher born 1778 in Hascombe Surrey and died 1838 Newington.

The school does now have a website - http://www.stnicolas-guildford.org.uk/OurInfantSchool.html
I have made contact again with them with regard to establishing the location of old school records and photos, both of which are not at the family records centre at Woking.

I haven't got James Tweedie and Janet Baird on my tree. I think there are a couple of people who are tracing Tweedies, who use this board. It might be a good idea to start a new thread.
Julie

Perhaps a link to the new thread might be useful, and easy for other researchers to spot.

JDGS hubby

loved looking at the pictures of the Scroggs Bridge brought back great memories of when I lived in Lockerbie and we all walked to the Scroggs to go swimming and the Blue Eel memories of the library with the stuffed salmon but no memories of any books lol

Fiona

I'm not a great library fan, that's JDG. When we are in Lockerbie she is often in the library having a look though the local history section. Scroggs is lovely, very peaceful, but that main road through to Bankshill seems a fair bit of traffic now.

Can anyone provide me with a list of Italian POW's in Halifax during the 2nd World War.  I believe these once appeared in the October edition of the Anglo Italian Journal.

Have you had any success with this? I have looked through all my copies of the journal of the AIFHS and nothing jumps out about POWs in Halifax, although there are various bits about POW camps in all parts of the British Isles.

What surname are you seeking?

I'm late coming to this thread. There is a One Name Study for the name of IREDALE - you can contact the study holder by emailing iredale@one-name.org

Edit - (there is usually a facility via the GOONS web page (http://www.one-name.org) to contact study holders, but due to technical issues this has been removed, so I have included the email above, by removing the email there is no way for a non GOON to contact the study holder!)

Such an unusual surname, although my cousin is married to one and they are in the South East of England.  Being slightly obsessive about some surnames that occur in various family lines, I make note of those I come across - Here a two that I have located:

GRINDALL   Thomas "At Low Houses, Brigham, on the 22nd inst., Thomas the dearly beloved husband of Frances GRINDALL in his 72nd year.  Was interred at Brigham, on Friday, 25th inst.,  Friends please accept this intimation. His end was peace."

GRINDALL    Joseph  - Grindall's Assignment. - Whereas Joseph GRINDALL, of Fitz in the parish of Torpenhow, in the County of Cumberland, farmer, hath, by indenture of assignment bearing date the 25th day of January last pa??, assigned and transferred all his farming stock and crop, personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever, unto Jonathan BELL, of Whitehaven, in the said county, shoemaker, and Joseph BRAYTON, of Aikbank, in the parish of Moresby, in the said county, yeoman, in trust for the equal benefit of his creditors. Notice is hereby given, that the said assignment is lodged at the office of Mr Walker, solicitor, King Street, Whitehaven, for execution by the creditors of the said Joseph Grindall. And all persons indebted to the said Joseph Grindall, are to pay their respective debts to the said assignees, otherwise they will be proceeded against for recovery thereof. Whitehaven,
