Hi Ronnie,
I have a Boxall right out on the far edges of my tree!  It is Mary, born about 1925 and married to a Stanley J Guess, in 1949 in Surrey North Western, wherever that is!
Does she figure in your archive?
Regards,
Ron

do you have a copy of the marriage certificate?  If so can you give me all the details especially the father's name and witnesses, and where the couples were living at the time if the marriage.  If I have those details I have a better chance of working out which Mary is yours.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Hi ronniem

Looking for info on a BOXALL family from Brighton pre 1880

John BOXALL married Elizabeth Jane Evelyn JEFFERIES in Jun 1877 - East Preston W/ Sussex [waiting for wedding certificate]
Ran the "Chain Pier Restaurant" in Brighton [Census 1881]

Any info would be much appreciated

cheers russell

ps. this is my partners G,G/P

Hi Russell;
This John is a mystery, he is in the 1881 census  but then I can't find him.  When you have the wedding certificate can you send me the details, especially the name of his father.  Maybe with the name of the father I can figure out which John this is.

Sorry I don't have anything else at this time.

Thanks Koromo.

I know that area around the Kent/Sussex border reasonably well, having visited there twice on ancestor-hunting expeditions. I have other lines from Sandhurst and Ewhurst.

Mercy BOXSETT (BOXSELL) is a mystery - I don't think she's connected, because Mercy has never been used in the family since, and it's a family which carries its christian names in perpetuity. Ditto with Benjamin.

John

Hi John;
Just to let you know that Mercy BOXSELL does connect to your BOXSELL family.  I have posted details on Genealogywise if you would like me to repeat the details here please let me know.

Also to let you know I have found your Mary BOXSELL living with her Uncle in Greenwich, Kent in 1841.  I'm still looking for her two brothers, I think I came across William but under a very different name so am trying to re-do my research to find him again.  Because the name changes so often you could find them under the various other spellings for BOXALL.

This name really connects to the BOXALL One Name Study so I did not think to check and see if anyone had added one of the variant spellings to this forum.

Hope we can make contact with each other.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Have just realised what I read as 'Bexsell' on a certificate may be Boxsell!  My ancestor Mary Bexsell/Boxsell was from Slindon, Sussex and born c1813.  Do your folk have gypsy links?   Koromo, Mercy is a popular gyspy name. Not saying yours necessarily is, but thought I'd mention it.

I just realised that there is a BOXSELL list here and just to let you know this falls under my BOXALL One Name Study, being one of the many variants that occur.  I do not have details of records back to 1813 for Slindon, Ssx.  You mention you have some sort of certificate for Mary could you possibly give me further details?  I'm hoping that there are names of her parents on the Certificate.  Are you sure she was born in Slindon?  Do you have a marriage for her that I can trace her through Census information to confirm her birth location?
Looking forward to seeing if I have the information that you are looking for.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie

My gggg grandmother was a Sarah Boxall  B 1788C Petersfield, Hampshire. She married Charles Whiting on the 25/2/1813 in Petersfield. I wonder if you have ever come across her?

Sue
Hi Sue;
Sorry for the delay in replying.  I have Sarah in my database but as of yet have not worked on that particular BOXALL family.  Could you send me more details on her Marriage as my Petersfield information ends in the very early 1800's and as of yet I have not had the opportunity to glean further information from the Internet nor have I managed to purchase many of the Hampshire Registers on Microfiche.  Would you by anychance have easy access to the Petersfield records and be willing to assist me in my research?

Hi again Ronnie,

I have found what I think might be your original man -

DEPOT:                   KAB (Cape Town Archives)
SOURCE:                 MOOC
TYPE:                      LEER
VOLUME No.            6/9/117
SYSTEM:                  01
REFERENCE:            3170
PART                        1
DESCRIPTION:          BOXALL, HENRY.  DEATH NOTICE
STARTING:                1866
ENDING:                   1866

The name of the researcher in Cape Town is Graham Lloyd and his email is lacey@yebo.co.za

I think this might be the place to start.  The death notice should list his place of birth, his parents, his spouse and children, plus where he died and whether he had property.

I have taken a note of every other Boxall death notice from every archive in South Africa and am in the process of typing up a list - it is beginning to show the beginnings of family groups.  There were 105 entries for Boxall in the Archives, some of which may be of interest to you later on - divorces, court cases, property transactions etc.
The prevalent names are Henry, Arthur, Edward, George, Edwin, August, Albert, William, Percival, Stanley, Herbert, Vincent, Geoffrey and Hugh.
Hi Tisy,
You are wonderful.  You are the first person I've had contact with who could come up with any sort of information for South Africa.  I don't want to duplicate what you have already done, silly both of us paying for the same documents.
Please let me know what you are willing to share with me and I will assist with information from my extensive database.  It may be easier to share information by using our regular emails address.  I can be reached at:

Moderator comment: email address removed to prevent spam - Rootschat policy - please use the PM system to exchange such info securely

Percival is not a very common name in the BOXALL circles so this could indicate a possible family the same with Stanley and this would be the first Vincent and I only have one other Geoffrey.
As the information builds it is interesting to see family links coming to light also.  I look forward to working with you as you work on your BOXALL connections.
Thank you.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Hi,

My late mother-in-law was Antonia Ivy Boxall;  the family lived in King William's Town, South Africa.  I am not sure of the father's name, but there were three daughters - Antonia Ivy, Doris and Edith.  The only connection to the U.K. I have is a story about a Boxall relative who played the violin at a command performance for Queen Victoria in London;  his violin was a Stradivarius (it turned out to be a fake when we took it to Sothebys!) - this violin was later donated to a museum in East London, South Africa.

I have not looked in to how they came to be in South Africa;  I think they must have migrated sometime during the 1850's or later.  I do know that the father married a lady of German descent, one of the many German settlers who came to this area of South Africa at that time.

Ivy Antonia married Ronald Nettleton Gordon and they had two children, Raymond Garth and Margaret.
Hi Tisy;
Thank you for posting a message here.  I am finding the BOXALLs in South Africa very difficult to research.  I have various contacts all who are possibly related to each other being descendants from one BOXALL who emigrated in the 1800's and had quite a large family of mainly boys.  The trouble is knowing that I have not been able to really workout the descendants other than the fact there are numerous BOXALL descendants for this one man.  I'm guessing that maybe your Antonia Ivy BOXALL is also connected.

If you can possible find more information on this BOXALL family I would love to work out a connection to a BOXALL family in England.  Thank you for the details you have passed onto me.
Kindest regards
Ronnie

Armed Forces / Re: Kings Royal Corps 1882 - what is it?
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 01:32 BST (UK)  »
I've just been reading this series of messages and I think I may have another or similar problem.  I received an email requesting help in finding the name of a Mr BOXALL who married an Elizabeth Ann ?  All I'm given is that her 2nd husband ?  BOXALL could have been born in Sussex.  She may have married him in South Africa around about 1896, unless they met and married in India where Elizabeth's first husband and first two children died. Caroline was born in South Africa abt 1895; and Emma (called Elaine first name was Emma) was born in Malta abt 1896. They came back to live in Yorkshire. ? BOXALL died before 1901.
With these few clues I found Elizabeth with the two girls in 1901 living in Farnley, Yorkshire.  I found Emma E. (birth/Baptism) 1895 no parents named just a note that states 60th Regiment; in Naples, Malta.
Any chance this could be the same BOXALL that is being looked for and a second marriage for him?

I'm researching BOXALL's World Wide as a One name Study and would love to answer this riddle.

Thanks
Ronnie
