Australia / WILLIAM MAYES
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I was hoping for some help in finding information about WILLIAM MAYES (Born Co Down), married to ELIZABETH (possibly EPPS).  She was born in Melbourne circa 1874.  They married around 1890 and had at least 1 child in Sydney (JENNIE) in 1893.  I think there was an elder child also.  They then moved to California to have 2 more kids, then back home to Ireland where they settled in Lisburn.   Trying to find any info on their time in Australia, getting there, marriage details and Jennie's birth details.  I'd also like to know more about ELIZABETH.  First time looking at Australia, so any help appreciated.
Thanks

Thankyou very much.  James Witherspoon's parents were Charles and Mary Jane - they are in Down in 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Upper_Iveagh__Lower_Half_/Clarkill_Row_Town/1226509/

I can't find them or his siblings in 1911 in Ireland. I had hoped that they may be on a passenger list with their son James and Martha McGarvey.  However I searched the site you kindly provided for Canada census and cannot find them there either.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Just a quick update.  I have now confirmed that Jane Dougal was James McGarvey's mother.

Ireland / McGarvey emigration
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 22:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
I have Martha McGarvey living in Belfast in 1901 and marrying in York County, Canada in 1906.
Could anyone advise where I could get info about her emigration and who may have traveled with her?
Thanks a million

Leanne thank you any info would be great. I'm in contact with other McAree families in Belfast around the same time.  Your family will likely link into one of our McAree families.  We've yet to find the elusive link between them but am certain there is one.  I will pm you my email.

Just in case it helps...
I expect this is her parents marriage -
Hugh Stevenson m Maria Blair on 31 July 1870.
St Anne's COI Belfast
Hugh's father being Alexander Stevenson
Maria's being Hugh Blair

For this couple Ancestry Ireland has the births of
Maria May 1871
Margaret Jane 1872
James Kennedy 1876
Eliza 1878
Annie Steele 1880
Sarah 1883
Alexander 1885
Hugh 1887
Lizzie M 1890

Hi Venda
Thanks for your response.  I wasn't suggesting 'just guessing', just that I shouldn't discount the census record you so kindly found  :)

The basic info I have is as follows:

Marriage cert - William Alfred Edwards married Henrietta James in Trinity COI Belfast 16/12/1895
His occupation is Sergeant, and his address The Curragh Camp, Co Kildare.  His father is listed as Albert Edwards, carpenter.

1901 census - He is in 49 Manor Street Belfast, with Henrietta and 7 children
He was born 'London City', is a cabinet maker aged 44.

In 1911 the family are at 41 Hartley Street Belfast - William is not with Henrietta and 9 of their 11 children.  I have been unable to find him anywhere in Ireland in 1911.

On his army forms he writes that he was born in Bloomsbury, London.  He is aged 24 at time of signing up and is a carpenter.  He joined the 64th Brigade at Portsmouth on 21 August 1880, his military no being 2462.  The forms go on to say that he was on Home service from aug 1880 - dec 1885, in Malta until may 1886, transferred to army reserve on Home service until aug 1892.  He was discharged in 1892 at Omagh, having served his 12 years.  There is a note on the document which says 'Next of kin Anne, mother, London, Middlesex' but there is no address or surname for her.

Of his 11 children born pre 1911 census - all were born Belfast, except Ann, his first born - She was born in Hackey c1886.  Another child was born in 1911 after the census.

I appreciate your taking the time to help.  As I said, I am unfamiliar with London and English records in general.
Thanks
Karen
