Sutherland / Re: Thurso Parish 1841 Census
« on: Thursday 02 October 08 10:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Joy

No, you haven't wasted my time at all. Only glad to help where possible.

Brims is not a parish, its a farm within the parish of Thurso. There are about 110 names listed at Brims in the 1841 census. Sadly, one Angus, but he is only 20, so can't be him.

I have noticed elsewhere that the name Cursty is used as a short Catherine. Chritian/ Christen and Catherine/ Cathren are commonly interchanged.

The fact that there daighter got married in South Ronaldsay/Burray, suggests that the family may now live there. Perhaps the mention of Brims was where her parents were married.

By the way .... what was the daughter's name, and who did she marry?

As ever ... more questions than answers!

Neil

Hi Joy

Have got a number of Angus's but no Cursty. Have a Kirsty, though, but not living with Angus. Is Cursty a contraction of another name, and do you know what ages they would roughly be in 1841?

Also do you know what Cursty's maiden name is, or any names of family members that may be living with them.

Thanks
Neil

World War One / WW1 War Memorial
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 22:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ... hope you can help me with this one.

My grandfather's brother was killed in action during WW1. He is on The Roll of Honour, and I have found his grave in CWGC. However, what I would like to do is find where his name is inscribed on a war memorial here at home.

Is there a central point to find where named persons are inscribed? Do they put the fallen on memorials in their parish of birth, or where they were living before setting off to the theatre of war?

There's a bit more info on him here http://www.oursutherlands.com/Gen_2/william1893.html

I look forward to your suggestions, and thanks!

Neil

Unfortunately, there are no Stuarts at all in this census. There are 2 George Stewarts though, both aged 20. One was born in Caithness, while the other was born elsewhere in Scotland.

It could be that the enumerator mis-spelled their names. That census doesn't state the marital status, and there is no Middletons to be found.

You been a long time waiting ...

Yes, there were a lot of immigrants to Patagonia in late 1800's early 1900's from these shores. Many Scots and inparticular Welsh headed out to S.America (Hence how Football got there, and in the case of Argentina, rugby from the Welsh.)

The Irish too, tried their luck, but seem to have favoured Chile for some reason.

Why? ... Well, basically, there wasn't enough room here so the adventurous headed south to create what is now known as the ranch farmer (ranchero) out there. Empty lands in the United States had dried up by now, so South America seemed to be the next option, but it didn't take off the same way as it did further North.  You would be suprised by the impact that these settlers had in their time there. Argentinian beef for example, was imported from the uK originally. Their farming and rearing practises are based on Welsh beef husbandry.

Finally, Deigo McMaradona is actually from the Gorbals!

I'm always surprised by the number of people I meet or read about on here who never knew their own grand-parents ... maybe I was just lucky, in that mine lived next door !   And the generation before them were often subjects of family conversations ...

For what itt is worth, all four of mine died before I was born. Both Grandfathers committed suicide and both grandmothers succumbed to the big C . Don't fancy my chances!

What really finished me off was the haunting singing of Benny Kaplinsky in the ruined synagogue - breathing life and prayer and music back into those 15th century walls after decades of silence.  Amazing.

Anna

Yeah ... it was amazing to hear the Hebrew Prayer ... has anybody know what it was called?

Would love to watch the programmme again just to hear the end piece again.

Thanks for that everyone.

I got a bit way laid by the buckle of his belt, which is like an "S". It looks as if things have been narrowed down to my Grandfather, who was in the Gordons. The girl was, as it turns out, his sister who, after searching NA was in the WAAC - managed to get her records.

Thanks again ... and happy digging up the dead!
