Tees. I have his complete war records & it definately states his name as CHARTERIS & where he was born: NEW BROMPTON, CHATHAM, KENT, ENGLAND.
I know it is called Gillingham now (New Brompton)

What would a transcription give me that the others dont? I got all the information about him from his war records. My private email is

Hi Tees, I have about all but given up on finding any records of my great grand fathers birth records  :'( I have tried to apply for thier marriage certificate several times but am having a hard time every time I ring Ireland to find out who I actually apply for the certificate too. Any advise on what to do next??? Thanks for the help, Angela Charteris

Here is also a family photo taken about 1908/1909 just before they imigrated to Western Australia as well as a photo taken in Western Australia when they were much older. I thought someone might recognise the photo.

Hi, I am looking for any information regarding the birth records of my great grand father "HENRY VANE CHARTERIS" or his wife Annie Moore. He was born 1858/59 New Brompton, Chatham, Kent, England. She was born 26th Feb 1862 in Armagh to Charles Moore & "Anne". They married 14th Feb 1882 at St Marks, Co Armagh, Armagh, Ireland.

I have since found out that where Henry was born, is a Naval/Marine/Army base now known as Gillingham. I have been searching for over 10 years  for any information on his birth/parents/siblings with no success. I have his complete Military history records from enlistment to when he left the military service but they don't say who his parents are. I cannot find his birth records anywhere, despite extensive seaches. Can anyone help me please???

 He married Annie Moore who was from Armagh, Ireland. I have searched the Medway records, 1837online, St Catherines house index with no success.

 I have enclosed 2 photographs of them as well as a family photo taken just befor they imigrated to Western Australia abt 1908/1909. I hope someone can help me.

Hi. just got back in. Yes I have tried so many websites. Nothing ever has turned up. I have his death cert & it doesn't mention his family at all, just his wife & children.

I have searched for over 10 years for anything & I will never give up looking lol. Yes, I have been to 1837online, Nothing showed up. I will try the Armagh board as you suggest, but I think I did that a while ago with no success but will give it another go.

I have been trough the St Catherines house index to births extensively with no success as well. The only clue I have is the my grand father (Henry's son) spoke fluent French but no-one ever knew why.

On Henry's war records it does say he was enlisted with the Connaught Rangers, which is an Irish military regiment & a close Irish friend told me that you have to be born in Ireland to join. I do know my great grand mother Annie was born in Ireland, they were married there but his war records & death cert defiantly states he was born in England.

Well, I will keep trying & thanks for your help so far & if you can think of anything else, I would greatly appreciate the advice.

Hi, I have had nothing but trouble trying to get their marriage certificate. There is nothing of value in his military records as I have his complete war records from when he 1st inlisted to when he fianlly was released from service. I have also looked up the Medway records but got lost in there & didn't understand it.

Im not sure where to go from here.

Let me know what you think I should do. His military records dont list any kin except his wife & children & where they were born.

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have searched all through the census records. He isn't in the 1861/71 census. 1881/91 Census, he was in India seving in the Army. 1901 census I have him with his wife & children. Then he emigrated to Australia..I haven't been able to get thier marriage certificate. I know when & where they were married: 14th Feb 1882 St Marks, Co Armagh Ireland (I got that from his military records. I have not found any link to the Scottish Charteris families at all & from the feed back I have found, we are not linked to them at all.
I will do a thorough search of that link you gave me & thanks for the help. Maybe soon the mystery side of my family will be solved. Angela
