Thank you, amondg.  It is certainly hard to cross the A217 these days!

Surrey / TILT, Tadworth and Kingswood, 1841 & '51

Please can anyone help me to locate the whereabouts of Thomas and Ann TILT more accurately?  In the 1841 census they are living in Kingswood, I believe alongside the turnpike road, with their daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Edward PRESTON.  Thomas TILT is described as a farmer, and the fifth member of the household was an 8 year old, Nathaniel SHOVE, described as a cow boy, so perhaps Thomas was keeping stock on the common.

By 1851 the TILT couple are living on their own, in north Tadworth, and Thomas is described as a retired farmer.  Thomas died in 1852 and Ann a year later, and they are both buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's Kingswood.

Please can anyone who understands the lie of the land better than I do advise me whether these are two separate addresses, or one and the same?  I should like to imagine Thomas and Ann surrounded by lavender fields, but perhaps they were in the wrong place for that, or perhaps lavender was not grown commercially at that time?

With thanks for any ideas,

Beetle.

They are indeed very nice photos.  Thank you for the link.  The whole site seems to be an excellent resource for finding out about things in Epsom, and I have some leads I can follow up there.

Fantastic, ShaunJ.  Many thanks.  It makes good sense, the Marquis of Granby being off the A24, the road to Dorking.  I have a dim recollection of visiting it on Boxing Day, 1957, and it's nice to see on the web that it's still there.

Thank you so much for these two valuable pieces of information, Mabel.  The executors' accounts say that they received £255 for the mortgage on the David May estate at Epsom on 9th August 1813, as well as £14.9s.4d for rent on it.  But I don't know for what period the rent was, although this item does not appear again in the four years covered by the accounts.

John Tilt was an illiterate yeoman farmer who made a lot of money from smuggling and highway robbery.  He had several loans out when he died - I expect it was a form of money laundering!

I am grateful for your help.

Has anyone come across this property?  It appears in the executors' accounts for the will of John Tilt of Capel in 1813.  It seems that John held a mortgage on it, but where in Epsom is it, and who was David May?

Any ideas gratefully received,

The Robin Hood pub is still there -just.  There is a planning application to demolish it and build flats.

Surrey / Re: Surrey Burial 1883 William Tilt advice please

Hello Peter (and Jane),

Unfortunately I cannot help with the burial place of William Walker TILT.  I have not been able to make any connection between this group of Worcestershire Tilts and the Tilts who settled in Capel, near Dorking.  I think there must be a link somewhere, but perhaps it is too far back in time to find.

Good luck with your search,

Beetle.
