Hi Hugh,

I feel a bit of a berk now for not having figured this out before - but I was labouring under the illusion that BMD stuff between 1915 and 1984 wasn't available via Ancestry. Doh!!!  :-[

Thank you Hugh for taking the trouble to explain the situation to me - now that I know that I can find records that I've been missing (albeit somewhat laboriously!), I'm made up!

And, for anyone who cares about the outcome of my original request, John Arthur Cullabine's death was registered Q2 1932 (Ecclesall Bierlow, 9c, 377), aged 22! Now I just need the death cert. to find out why he died so young...

You can search the BMD indexes for free at http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

Hi,

Unless I've been missing a major trick, there is a big black hole in the ancestry BMD records between c.1915 and 1984... in other words, if you're looking to find out about an event that occurred between 1915 and 1984, www.ancestry.co.uk can't help you (and this from a signed-up member who thinks ancestry is great!).

If you can tell me otherwise Tuppie, I'll be delighted!

I wonder if anyone can conceivably help me!

I'm looking to find ANY record of John Arthur CULLABINE, who was born at 53 Fentonville Street, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield on 27th July 1909, from 1909 onwards!

I have heard (although the source is not reliable and the details are very sketchy) that John died as an adolescent or young man, possibly due to ill health.

Does anyone have access to death records for Sheffield in the 1920s or 1930s, who could kindly look and see if there is any record of his death then?

Alternatively, the story could be wrong and John may have gone on and married and had a family... but when, where and who did he marry?

If anyone can come up with ANYTHING more than I have now, that would be absolutely fantastic.

Thank you very much Scott.

I am so excited about this. I've ordered the certificate and should have it by 24 October, yipee!

Many thanks,

Jamjar

You're most welcome Jamjar (just don't call me Scott!  ;) ) - I hope the marriage cert. gives you all the info you're looking for!

No need to go to St. Catherine's House - you can order b, m & d certs on-line from the General Register Office http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ using the reference details (place, volume and page). Certs. cost £7 and take just over a week by post.

All the best,

Simon  :)

Marriage of Jenkin Jenkins and Mary Morgan was AMJ Qtr 1849, Neath, vol. 26, p. 766a. The marriage cert. should hopefully give both their ages, and the names and occupations of their respective fathers.

Cheers,

Simon

I don't know if it is in anyway significant but there is a death of a David Coulthard registered in Bristol (other side of the Bristol Channel I know, but then you didn't say where the inquest was held) in OND Qtr., 1870. That David Coulthard was aged 47 (or thereabouts) at the time of death.

If this is in any way helpful, the details are as follows:

OND Qtr., 1870, Bristol, vol. 6a, p. 15.

Good luck!

I should add that I'm really anxious to get hold of the marriage certificate for the marriage of Edgar Bassett Arthur and Harriet Ivy Draper because I'm intrigued to find out who (if anyone) is named as Edgar's father on it, given that no father is named on Edgar's birth certificate.

But the search for the marriage certificate is not made easier by the fact that Edgar and Harriet are from different counties in different countries. It's impossible to even guess where the marriage may have taken place.

OK, well the marriage certificate for Harriet Ivy Arthur (née Draper) and Arthur Fowler in 1918 has arrived, and it has enabled me to identify Harriet's origins.

The marriage certificate shows Harriet was a 33-year-old widow at the time of her marriage to Arthur Fowler on 11th December 1918, and that her father had a fairly distinctive first name - Elijah! Knowing that Harriet was born in 1885 and that her father's name was Elijah Draper has enabled me to track down Harriet's family of origin.

Harriet was born OND 1885 in Shatterford, Worcestershire. Her father was Elijah Draper born c.1858 in Shatterford. Her mother, Harriet Draper (née Childs) was born in 1861 in Stockton-on-Teme, Worcs.

Harriet jr. had four sisters (Sarah, Dorothy, Jesse & Edith) and two brothers (Egbert [!] and Samuel).

Furthermore, I've been able to trace the Drapers AND the Childs back a futher generation. Elijah Draper was the youngest of five born to Elijah Draper, sr. (b.c.1818) and Ann Draper, née Tomkins (b.c.1818), whilst Harriet Childs was the youngest of five children born to Samuel Childs (b.c.1813) and Ann Childs, née Evans (b.c.1822).

HOWEVER, despite having identified Harriet Ivy Draper's origins, I am still left with the unresolved question of when and where she married Edgar Bassett Arthur. I can find no trace of the registration of this marriage! There is no trace of it via www.freebmd.org.uk or www.ancestry.co.uk. Can anyone suggest any other avenue where I might identify Harriet and Edgar's place and date of marriage? My hunch is that they married between 1906 and 1910.
