Hi Roy, I have checked the Baptisms at St Sannans Bedwellty for 1883 to 1885, there is no record of an Alfred Wells burial, the only two Wells Burials at St Sannans are two girls 2 and 4 year old about five years later, they were from Bargoed.
Where was he born, is it a case of being buried in his home town or vilage ?
Best wishes Rowley

Hi Paul, There is a marriage of a Griffith Williams to Cecelia Thomas in 1847 at Briton Ferry, He is listed as a Hobbler, which apparently is a Pilot.
There are Baptisms for David Williams 1848 and Margaret Williams 1850, Parents Griffith & Cecelia Williams, Griffith a Hobbler in 1848 and a Pilot in 1850. they lived at Dan Y Craig Cottage, Briton Ferry
Is it a coincidence ?
Best wishes Rowley
