Roscommon / Re: Ffrench family History

Thank you Heywood, I am now looking at Godfrey Allen Ffrench (father Robert and mother Georgina) as it seems to fit and the sailing time is right, many young men fled at the time of the Uprisings. I'm going to email the other researchers and get their thoughts, many thanks once again.

Thank you to everyone, It is so confusing both Francis Alan Ffrench and Francis Allen French are born similar times and both died in 1943. Both left Ireland at very similar times, Francis Allen French from Cork child of Edward Allenn Penrose French sailed to Singapore and then settled and married in New Zealand. The other, Francis Alan Ffrench from Rosscommon child of Robert N Ffrench died in the US. Only the US Francis Alan Ffrench had children. Both are related to Robert Nugent Ffrench. My DNA shows connection to both and both families making my Ancestry trees an absolute mess having spent years researching the ancestry of Francis Allen Penrose French instead of Francis Alan Ffrench. .

Thank you so much for your replies. After years of researching the family of Edward Allen Penrose French I've recently discovered that althoiugh related it's not the correct family. Francis Alan Ffrench is definitely the son of  Robert and Georgina from REosscommon and I can only presume that he was staying somewhere else during the census. He left Ireland for the US approx 1930, settled and had family that I'm now in contact with.

Children

Family history should never be so complicated, wish I'd listened more when I was a child!

Northumberland Lookup Requests / St Mary's Convent Berwick. 1910 to 1930
« on: Saturday 30 November 19 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying, without any luck to find out where the School Records of St Mary's Convent, Tweed Street, Berwick upon Tweed, 1910/1930 can be found. I've tried Northumberland Archives and National Archives among lots of others but no luck whatsoever. The  Convent is now a School, I've spoken the them but they have no idea where the records can be found. I don't know Berwick would anyone know if there was a nearby Catholic Church that would have associated with the Convent (Ursuline Nuns) . Most grateful for any help.

Travelling People / Travelling Showmen Vinegar Hill Fairs 1900's
« on: Friday 29 November 19 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
It appears my early family of Irish travelling Showmen (Connacht Bazaar) would most likely have attended the Vinegar Hill Fairs in Glasgow early to mid 1900's, does anyone know how I might get confirmation. Many thanks

Donegal / Re: John Mailey

Many thanks Aghadowey, I've been trying to track down confirmation of my late father birth for the past 15 years but without success. His mothers family were Irish Travelling Showmen and at the time of his mothers pregnancy she should have been in education at a Catholic Convent in England with her other siblings but she obviously returned to Ireland and appears to have been supported by her parents before she went to the US in 1928. Her parents later separated and Dad seems to have been with his grandfather (Thomas Brennan) in Raphoe, he attended the Raphoe School where his grandfather is is listed as his guardian but no address shown, Dad was confirmed in Raphoe aged 10 yrs old but the records only show him living in Raphoe but no other details. Things have been made even difficult as I haven't been able to find any info regarding Dad's grandfather Thomas Brennan other than earlier ancestry via DNA. years ago I did have contact with a very old man in Raphoe who remembered my father at school and he remembered him living with the McElhinney's. Dad knew his birth father was name French/FFrench but I don't think he ever knew him, tracing via DNA I'm 99% sure I've found his father but he died in 1943 (New Zealand) without having any.. more children. Due to privacy I cannot put too much info re Dad's mother's Irish family as they are very well known and they cannot supply any info but were gobsmacked when I first contacted them about 10 years ago.

Many thanks for your replies Aghadowey, Terry and I are in contact but I'm not too well at the moment and haven't been able to follow up but hopefully things will improve for me during the next few days. Thrilled will the new info as I can now see (besides the Mailey and McElhinney marriage) the link between the Mailey's and McElhinney's more clearly. My interest is via the research of my late father Alan Brennan (DOB 1925) and his grandfather Thomas Brennan. Dad appeared to have finished school early and came to England with Bernard and Susan McElhinney in 1938 (Isobella's parents), Dad appears on the 1939 UK census as a 14 year old and working as a carpenter living in Chorlton on Medlock Manchester, haven't found any more info until after the War when he is living with the McElhinney's and married Mum 1947. Can't find a birth cert for Dad and Army Records do not have him on their records even though I have pics of his Army ID photo. All very much a mystery but have found Dad's birth mothers Irish family, sadly they knew nothing of him. Recently via DNA discovered his birth fathers family but once again no info re Dad.
