Armed Forces / Re: 13th Hussars
« on: Thursday 20 January 22 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Have you tried posting on the Armed Forces board?

My great grandfather was also in the 13th Hussars, but didn't join until 1879 and his service record is on one of the subscription sites.

I posted a query on the Forces board and some great people were able to tell me where he was. My granny's sisters were born all over the Uk and Ireland, so it was very useful.

Good luck
Hilary

United States of America / Re: Fanny Bradley nee Gainford

Hi Emily

Thanks for getting in touch - it's always great to find someone else researching the same family. I am descended from Henry Gainford and Martha Guest through their son Joseph, his son Isaac and his daughter Hannah, my great grandmother.

I did eventually find some information about Fanny Bradley nee Gainford that confirms the story outlined above.
I had an email conversation with a very helpful lady from the Yukon Archives who found the following -

"In the reference material researched and compiled by Star and Ed Jones titled "Hillside Public Cemetery, Oct. 26, 1898-1984"  there is listed 'Bradley, Fanny, age 30 and Bradley (baby)' , with November 18, 1899 as their date of death. The Hillside Cemetery, also known in the past as Evergreen, was Dawson's second public cemetery.  The listing was compiled by the Joneses over many years and from many sources. Those graves that had readable markers are noted - neither of the Bradley graves did. I checked the St. Mary's Hospital death records for that date, and there was no entry. This is not unusual, since most women would have given birth at home. Neither are they listed in the mortuary records in our holdings. Unfortunately, the microfilmed newspapers we hold of this time period are too faded to read."

And also this, but doesn't know the source, possibly church records -

Northumberland / Re: Luke Pearson, Newcastle

Just an update about recent discoveries - only last autumn!

While I was looking through some online newspapers of the Newcastle area, I found this in the Newcastle Journal -

"At Bonsall Derbyshire, on the 16th inst in the 81st year of his age, Mr George Pearson, the beloved father of Mr Luke Pearson of this town
20 June 1840"

Well, the cheers could be heard all the way to Bonsall as it is about half an hour from where we live.
As a result of further searches, the family have been in the Bonsall area for generations,  going back through George to his father Luke and his father Anthony.

Hi Ray

Yes, I'm still around although haven't logged in for a while.

Glad you were able to find the photo. As is the case many times when you inherit a box of family photos with nothing written on them, it's really frustrating. I was very appreciative of the help given here in solving this particular puzzle.

Good luck with your searches

Just to add my interest in the Pembertons -

my great (x3) grandfather was James Pemberton, born about 1770 in Lancashire and married to Martha Livesey in 1791 in Blackburn

Cumberland / Re: Maryport families

Hi

What a generous offer.

I would be very interested in the information on Peter Banks.

My grandmother's maternal line were the Banks family from Maryport and quite a few were tailors/upholsterers, back as far as Jonathan Banks born about 1780.

Many thanks

Many thanks Rockofages - I think you may have identified them.

I do have an Edward Marson on my tree. He was a first cousin to my Gran, his mother being Rachel Ann Plaxton. In which case the other policeman would be William Warcup - must have been a colleague, not a relative as far as I know.

I have found an Edward Marson in the 1911 census in Hull who would be the right age, so I will put him on the list of ones to get.

The George Plaxton is also on my tree - my Gran's uncle. He can't have been a policeman for long, as he was a servant in the 1871 census, a policeman when he married in 1878 and a general labourer in the 1881 census, then later becoming a railway signalman.

Thank you so much for sorting a long lasting family mystery

Hi Carol

Unfortunately there is nothing written on the back of the photo, so it is only guess work. If they are from my grandmother's side then they might be Plaxtons - most of this family is located in the East and North Riding.

I thought that they would be easy to identify since you can see the collar numbers, but have realised that the numbers were reissued and used by many policemen.

Sorry I can't be more helpful

Hilary
