Alice appears to have been an unwed mother who wanted to have her child adopted. It's sounding like Walton, rather than Sefton, might have been the place for that in 1936.

Yes, that's helpful. The practice probably continued after the reason for it disappeared.

The bigger picture here is that I have a DNA match with a woman living in greater Liverpool. We believe her grandfather was my uncle James. He married a Sarah Stokes but had mental problems already when they married, and was eventually put away. I was hoping this birth cert would list Sarah, not Alice, as the mother. Given the oddity of omitting the name of the hospital, though, I'm wondering how accurate the rest of the cert is!

I will look for adoption records and other birth records next. The RootsChat community is great. Thanks for your help!

Yes, the adoption part is a separate puzzle. I just received a copy of the birth cert I ordered from the GRO. "Adopted" is in the same handwriting as the rest of the information. The child was born on the 8th and the birth registered on the 22nd of August 1936. So the adoption seems to have been arranged before the birth was recorded. Since the father's name is not given, perhaps Walton Hospital arranged the adoption.

107 Rice Lane is what it says. The 7 has some curlicues & I mistook it for a 4. Sorry.

Thank you for checking the Register. I do not know that the birth address was a residence, though. That's why I was hoping to find an old map or street directory of some sort, for an address-based lookup. I have a marriage cert where a street address is a hospital but the hospital name isn't in the cert.

Normal Stokes born to Alice Stokes, father's name not given, says "adopted* at right of cert.
