Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Reformatory Ship AKBAR
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 07:44 BST (UK)  »
Thank you @ solidrock.  I have read through the online information, whilst detailing the history of the ship there is little to no reference to individuals, so if I wish to find out more information re John Hudson a trip to Lancashire Records is neccessary.

I do not live in the UK, therefore I am relying on the generosity of others who visit the Lancashire Records Office.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Reformatory Ship AKBAR
« on: Wednesday 07 August 19 23:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  Hoping I can enlist the help of someone offering lookups at the Lancashire Records Office.

I am researching my great uncle John Hudson, born Bristol, 12 March 1886.  Orphaned by the age of 6, John was an inmate on the Reformatory Ship Akbar in 1901 (census).
The Records Office collection is titled: Liverpool Juvenile Reformatory Association.
Reference Number: DDX 824 (4 Miscellaneous including admission registers) (5 Additional Deposits).

I'm afraid I do not know when John was sent to the Akbar, I understand that children could be sent to a reformatory "school" for between 2 to 5 years.

Hi.  I have a copy of Tim(othy) Sullivan's marriage cert at last.  It names his father as Pat(rick) Sullivan, Stone Cutter.  Timothy was full age when he married in 1878, and the 1901 census shows him as aged 43, so I'd say timothy was born c1857 / 1858.

I believe I've narrowed his baptism down to 2 possibilities:

1. 1857 in the parish of Knockainy[/color] & Patrickswell
2. 1857 in the parish of Ballyagran

Could Knockainy in any way be confused with Mccanea? McKainy????

Unfortunately, as the baptism records very rarely record the fathers occupation, I've no way of knowing which entry could be the correct one.

I've received details of baptisms for some of Timothy and Anne's children, which show Anne's maiden name to be Tiernan.  I've spent a bit of time searching on line records and established Timothy and Anne were married in 1878 in the Parish of Donore (Sheephouse falls within this Parish). I hope to apply for a copy of the marriage cert, which might give more detail, as the Parish record does not give father's forename.

Timothy's route appears to be: born ? Co Limerick c1858 -> married in the Parish of Donore, Co Meath in 1878 -> daughter Ellen born in Parish of Donore 1979 -> son Patrick born in Mallow c 1881 -> living in Midleton, Co Cork by 1882.

Unfortunately as far as I can see, none of this is of much help in the search for Timothy's place of birth.

Kibbie

Hi BreenByrne.
Thank you for your time. I'll try and answer some of your questions.
  • I note that at least one of Timothy and Annie's children was born in Mallow, not that this helps in any way but perhaps they were travelling a route via Charleville
  • Timothy is rather essential to my research, being my children's 3 x great grandfather
Leading on from the "Mt" possibility, could the place name be Knockanea?  I'm thinking Knock - hill or mount?
Unlike the 1901 census the 1911 census shows Timothy unable to read or write and he signs with a cross, so it is quite possible the place name was mis spelled. Unfortunately at this time both Timothy and Anne decide to enter their place of birth as Co Cork which doesn't help.

I'll keep digging, must be a clue out there somewhere.
Kind regards.

Thank you "BreenByrne" for your offer of help.

The details are: 1901 Census, Timothy Sullivan (43), Commissioners Buildings, Midleton

I hope you can make better sense of it than me.
Many thanks.

Hello. I wonder if I might trouble you for a few more lookups? Any of the following as taken from the 1901 Census. I'm hoping to establish mother's maiden name.

SULLIVAN Michael c1883 born Farsid, Nr Rostellan
SULLIVAN John c1885 born Carrigacrump
SULLIVAN Timothy c1886 born Carrigacrump
SULLIVAN Bridget c1889 born Carrigacrump
SULLIVAN Mary Ann c1894 born Upper Mill Rd, Midleton
SULLIVAN Tom c1898 born Ballinacurra

Is it more likely that those children born in Farsid & Carrigacrump would have been Baptised at Cloyne? The last 2 may be Midleton

Once again, many thanks for your kind help.
What are the parents names?  Would think given the area these would be Cloyne

Their parents are Timothy Sullivan and Ann/Annie (Surname unknown).
