Thanks Welsh Lady.
I have printouts of the items you mention, thanks.
You obviously noted the miss-spelling in the 1891 census for Godstone that they are down as Russen. This is a problem I have all the time.
1881 census
RG11 Piece 803 Folio 20 Page 34
Warwick Wold,Bletchingley,Surrey
William Rushen,Head,26,Gen Lab,Wiltshire
Sophie Rushen,Wife,21,Croydon,Surrey
William Rushen,Son,2,Bletchingley,Surrey
Thomas Rushen,Son,7m,Bletchingley,Surrey
William Rushen,Boarder,Unm.60,Ag Lab,Wiltshire
Although William Rushen 60 is shown as boarder I wonder if he is the brother of Thomas, therefore uncle of William Henry?
I have the death certificate for Thomas but that does not appear to help. Death reported by Susan Crane who you will see three entries below Thomas in 1891 census. She is 53 and single so probably not related.
I have trawled through the 1861 census for Berkshire, Surrey and Wiltshire for son William or Henry with father Thomas – no result.
Have also been through all census records 1841 – 1901 to build up a picture of the Rushen families who have a Thomas and William in them – no result.
I think I need somebody to do a bit more lateral thinking to solve the problem. Three of us have been trying for in excess of seven years!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do have a theory based on given names in the family that William Henry was born as William Robert in 1853 to Thomas and Maria Woolford. Supporting that is the fact that I cannot find a death or marriage for a William Robert.
If we look at William H’s children, if he is William R did he take their names as follows:- Thomas after father, Maria after his mother, Ellen Sophia after his youngest sister, Louisa after a sister. He also had aunts Eliza and Ellen.
Help!
