Perhaps you could post the specific pages that you've found to be in error.

Colin

Good point. The error is on image 52 of 59 in the Ancestry.com fiches, on page 267, Births, Oct/Nov/Dec [1837?], Hudson, William to Hughes, James.

I'm now wondering if it's just an error in the title of the page, because the previous page is dated correctly at 1837, as is the following page, and they follow in numerical order (266 and 268), as well as alphabetical order.

Sorry if I'm being an alarmist here, but I'm quite new to this sort of on-line research, and this was confusing to me...

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Beattey/Beattie/Hughes 1841 Census Request

Thanks so much for checking for me, jojo! Both the Liverpool and Manchester Harriets are possibilities, because the Sheridan set sail from Liverpool.

I do have the names of Archibald Beattey's children who were on the voyage with him, from the passenger list. His wife was listed simply as "W", which could stand for "wife" or her first initial. She was 37 in 1849.

The children were John Beattey age 13, ? Beattey, age 9, Ishbella [Isabella] Beattey age 7, Thomas Beattey age 5, Betsey Beattey age 3, Harriet Hughes age 11.

I think "Ishbella" is just sloppy handwriting for "Isabella" because Harriet named her eldest daughter Isabella.

Thanks again.

England / Error in GRO:BMD Oct/Nov/Dec 1837

I've reported this to the site already, but thought I should let people here know...if you call up the Oct/Nov/Dec 1837 page for BMD, you actually get the page for 1857 instead.

You can see the 1857 date clearly at the top of the page.

Just in case  it affects anyone who has been searching that period of time...

Cheers,

P.S. I notice you mention Accrington in your signature line. My paternal grandfather was a member of the Accrington Pals regiment in the First World War. He was wounded and survived a mustard gas attack, lost a leg and eventually died of the effects of the gas on his lungs.

My Dad passed away this passed April, but I know he had collected a lot of information about his side of the family, which my Mother now has. I'm really looking forward to going through all of that as well.

Thanks so much, Celia! I've changed the subject line as you suggested.

And now, just to prove my ignorance, can you remind me what IGI and GRO stand for? And where I would find them?  ??? (I'm hopeless, I know, but I've been searching mainly in Canada up to now, so not much idea of how to go about finding things in UK.)

Thanks again for any help. :)

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Beattey/Beattie/Hughes 1841 Census Request

This is my first post, and I'm somewhat new to this. A person at FamilyTreeCircles suggested I might post a request here for information.

For years now I have been searching for information on my maternal ggg-grandmother. Ideally I'd like to go back even farther in the maternal line, but I'm stuck at Harriet Hughes, b. Dec 23, 1837, somewhere in Great Britain.

Harriet came to North America in August 1849 on the packet ship Sheridan, in the company of Archibald Beattie (Beattey), gentleman, his wife and family. She was 11 years old. She may have been travelling with them as a servant, or she may have been related to them, a niece or cousin.

I know a good deal about Harriet's life after she arrived in Canada, married Theodore Coates Lusty, and had several children, settling in Hornings Mills, Ontario.

What I'd really like to know is where she was born, and who her parents were. I think my best plan may be to search for information on Archibald Beattie, in the hope that Harriet was related to the family. Mr. Beattie was 39 at the time the Sheridan sailed, so he was born about 1810. The ship set sail from Liverpool. Harriet stated in a Canadian census that she was born in England. The name "Archibald Beattie" seems to be Scots, but I could be wrong on that.

I'm sorry I have so little information, but if anyone has access to 1841 census information that includes Harriet Hughes or Archibald Beattie/Beattey, I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Elizabeth
