My thoughts were Parish Pauper or Parish to Pay? Maybe a reminder to claim for Baptism from Parish.

Scotland / Re: Death (Scotland) of Ellen/Helen McHendry or MacPhee b c1879 Ireland

Hi Annie

I am presuming Ellen was mother of Angus Macphee the' grass weaver' and could have been sent to a hospital far from home

Looking on SP found Ellen Mcphee age 69 died 1946 Camlachie (Glasgow) and Ellen McPhee aged 77 in 1955 at Milton, Dumbarton. Ages few years out and second death after 'widowed' husband. But you ever know.

Hope it helps

Time of birth is rare on English and Welsh certs but is on nearly all Scottish certs because it is a requirement .  Looks like Neal is researching mainly Scottish families.

The web site https://www.workhouses.org.uk gives an overview of individual workhouses ae nd information available.

From there a link to FindMyPast ( you can hold an account and search without paying for subscription)  I found Edward George Scoffield born 1811 entering workhouse 1880. Possibly for medical reasons.

Hi Steve

As the father is a Beer Retailer my thoughts are its the abbreviated name of a pub.

Also it's my understanding that Portsea Union doesn't mean the workhouse but the name of the administrative area.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Test
« on: Thursday 01 September 22 12:57 BST (UK)  »
My paternal grandparents were Italian born and my original Ancestry DNA test had me as English (90%). ???
The update now has me as 40% Welsh and mix of English, Nordic, Scots and Irish. The latter would be from Mum.

Still no Italians, or southern Europe ethnicity. I am totally bemused.

I wonder if the results are skewed because they were from a small isolated mountain village in the northern Apennines with 95%  having the same surname before they moved to Wales.

I thought I might find some American cousins but nothing yet.

Will now try following advice given here.

Would like to see at least some of my 50% Italian ancestry appearing.
