More on John Whistler christened 24 July 1698 at St Giles in Reading. I am desperate to know when and where he was married and also when and where he died - would someone please assist me. Did he and Elizabeth have children?  What was his line of work? Any information on this gentleman would be much appreciated.  Rod

Can anyone assist me in finding out what happened to a John Whistler of Reading who was christened 24 April 1698 at St. Giles?  His parents are listed as John and Elizabeth Whistler.  He apparently had six other siblings: Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, William, Luke and Joseph.  Am interested in his where-a-bouts after leaving Reading.

Thanks Alan.  This is the first time I've heard mention of Daniel and Jane Whistler.  However the John I'm looking for was married in 1730, so this seems to rule out the John c. 04 Oct 1719.  Now, if it was the John born in 1703 things might take on a different light.  Rod

Seeking information on a Lawrence Whistler whose father, Ralph Whistler, was born in 1540 at Fuscot, Berkshire - died 1577 - married Alice Forde.

Son Lawrence apparently was born 1570 at Stapenhill, Goring - died 1641 in Sotwell, Berkshire.  His wife Elizabeth was born 1593 and died 1657.  They were married at Wallingford in 1595 and raised the following children: RICHARD, LAWRENCE, LETTICE, THOMAS, JOHN and WILLIAM.

I am most interested in following this line to the present day or, at least until the early 1700's when I can account for members of my family.

Good Afternoon Nell:
I want to thank you for your patience and understanding during the past few weeks - you have made me realize how difficult it is to locate information on such an obviously mixed-up family.

My main purpose in this futile exercise was locate the names of one John Whistler's parents - John being the one who married Maria Grover at Odiham in 1730.  As no records exist about this John I tried working backwards from possible Whistlers who had a son John born circa 1700.  I now believe the Will of 13 July 1727 was indeed a red herring. I can make no connection between the Whistlers of Heckfield and Cholsey - just a stab in the dark on my part; I still believe a link exists between my Whistlers and those found on the Whistler Tree; they all appear to have lived in the Berkshire and Hampshire area.

If you have any ideas or thoughts on how I might approach this topic , please keep me in mind.  You can always contact me.

Again, many thanks for the effort you have given to this complex problem.

Hello Nell:
I am getting confused - must be a senior moment - just turned 85, so would love to see and end to my years of searching. Yes, the name Lawrence and John are quite common among my Whistlers - trying to sort them out after such a long time is proving insurmountable.  I am not even certain we have the right Lawrence or just a figment of my imagination? I am going to try numbering the Lawrence Whistlers to see if this will help.
LAWRENCE WHISTLER#1 c. at Cholsey 05 Sept 1641 - I have him married to a Bridget.  They had the following children: Was he also buried at Heckfield?
1. Bridget c. 29 Aug 1661 at Aldermaston
2. Lawrence #2 c. 22 Feb 1662 at Aldermaston
3. Edward c. 27 Feb 1664 at Aldermaston
4. Ann c. 15 May 1665 at Cholsey - Why? Is she buried in Heckfield 17 July 1708?
5. Thomas c. 03 Aug 1671 at Shinfield
6. John c. 09 Apr 1674 at Shinfeld.

LAWRENCE WHISTLER #2 (see Lawrence above) c. 22 Feb 1662 at Aldermaston. Is he the one who died 02 May 1727 at Heckfield, is buried there and left the Will dated 12 July 1727? We don't know who he married, but she might be the one who died in Heckfield 23 June 1713.  Children mentioned in his Will
1. Lawrence #3
2. Bridget
3. Dorothy
4. Mary c. 13 Nov 1676????
5. John
6. Elizabeth c. 29 Dec 1678 at Heckfield m. Simon Spire
Note: I know this is asking a lot, but could you lay the family relationships (as you see it) the way I have done above.

All of this would have been much simpler if John of Odiham had mentioned who his parents were when he married Maria Grover in 1730, but as you once told me marriage records at the date were sparse on detail - no parents were routinely recorded.  Odiham records are not on line so cannot check to see if John was christened there.  You also mentioned that he might have been born in Eversley, however, only his death is recorded there.

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong direction - it is so hard trying to work backwards! Another Whistler family of note is that of John Whistler and Elizabeth of Reading.  They too, had a son John c. 24 Apr 1698 - possibly the one who married at Odiham - right date and on the same road to Odiham.  What happened to this John? Of note Shinfield and Heckfield are also on the same route south, plus Eversley is nearby.  You have done a superb job in trying to help me sort out our Whistler clan - I am indebted to you.  Many thanks!

I would appreciate seeing you hang in there a while longer, however, it must be difficult for you to express your thoughts, such as this, on line.  You have cleared up a number nagging problems.

Again many thanks,
Rod

Good afternoon:
Many thanks for hanging in there with me. Nell! I'm certain we will finally make some sense of my Whistler line. One of the main reasons for me bringing up the topic of Lawrence Whistler's Will (dated 13 July 1727) is a common family relationship of names, his mention of JOHN who first appeared to have lived around the time of our John of Odiham or that families usually didn't travel great distances from their place of birth in those days. I attempted to look at areas in the vicinity of Odiham.

I don't remember where Lawrence Whistler's date of birth came from, or if he indeed was christened 27 Feb 1662 in Aldermaston. I believe his father, another Lawrence, was christened   05 Sept 1641 at Cholsey. The date of 1662, however, does suggest he married circa 1682. If this is the case, how come his daughter Mary was christened 20 Dec 1676  and her sister Elizabeth (the one who married Simon Spire) christened 20 Dec 1678?  Where did the name  Amos come from, especially when his name is not mentioned in the Will of 1727? Did he die soon after birth? Am I missing something here?
I don't appear to be getting any closer to our John who was married in Odiham in 1730. Perhaps I should take a  different line of attack.
