Amazing amount of help. Thank you.
I have ordered the marriage certificate as suggested and will get back to you all with that info.
Familysearch format has changed so much since I last used it ...I need to take a beginners course again.  :)

I am stuck with this family.

Sons as found on FreeBDM are Geoffrey Herbert York b 1916 and and Keith York b 1921. There should perhaps also be a daughter Elizabeth.

This must be Bernau, Brandenburg.
The small bit of info I have is from Brandenburg, Prussian Emigration Records.
It has August and Bertha with children
Frederich Wilhelm Franz WENDT (SCHMIDT) born 26 June 1847
Therese Elizabeth Bertha WENDT/SCHMIDT born 12 Mar 1849 Bernau,
August Robert Max SCHMIDT born 13. Jun 1853 Bernau,
Robert Wilhelm Heinrich SCHMIDT born 2 June 1855 Bernau,
Emilie Caroline Therese SCHMIDT born 31 July 1856 Bernau

I would dearly like to find birth/baptism records for the children and marriages for August and Bertha. I have the idea that August was stepfather to the two oldest children.

My research has ground to a halt as I've no clue how to carry on.
I have Carl Friedrich August SCHMIDT (aka August) born abt 1828 married (don't know when) to Johanna Bertha KOCHENDORFER born 1825 Bernau, Germany. Sailed from Hamburg 1858 to South Africa with children Franz (11), Bertha (9), Max (5), Robert (3), Emilie (2)
On Johanna Bertha's death Notice in 1905 children Franz and Bertha are noted as step children.
On Franz's marriage he wrote that he was known as Francis WENDT.

I'm completely stumped with the "new" Familysearch - really don't seem to find the right filters.
Don't have a clue how to research in Germany.
Any help please will be greatly appreciated.

Using the info I was given here I did find the documents But .......... with most of the info on hand being very exact to finding the births, marriages and census.
My searches were broad in that I'd put in example James PARK birth 1854 to 1860 Aberdeen.
In all honestly it's probably just a dose of 'Me'
