Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: ramsdens of oldham

Hi Frankie

Prestwich-cum-Oldham (also known as Prestwich with Oldham) was an ancient parish.  The parish encompassed a total of ten townships, and several smaller chapelries.

Oldham was one of these townships.

Looks like you checked out the main church.  I do know that marriages took place at Manchester Cathedral too.  T

There is a local studies centre in Oldham who I am sure would be able to advise you.

Hi Paul

The marriage I am looking for is between Mary Jane Evans and Thomas Rowlands.  I think I have located it on Northwales BMD.  But Thomas is listed as Rowland and not Rowlands.

The marriage also took place in 1866.

Can I ask where did you get the details of the marriage between mary jane and samuel?  I am very new to geneology.

I should have her marriage and birth certificate within the next week to 10 days so I am going to wait until I have these to see whether is father is John Evans.

I live in Oldham, Lancashire, so will have to wait until I next visit my aunt to search through parish registers.

Wilcoxon

I know the story of John Evans and know that he died in 1865.  Tales of John Evans have been passed down from generation to generation.  I have some notes left by my great aunt that details everyone in the family back to Mary Jane Rowlands.  I have confirmed these details through Census Returns and Marriages and Births listed with North Wales BMD.  I am sending off for some of these certificates to confirm further but I am getting these one at a time, just in case there is a red herring.

Confirming that my Mary Jane Rowlands is the daughter of John Evans is really my spanner in the works.

I have one source of information stating that John Evans daughter was Mary Jane Rowlands know as the nurse ....   This information is in a book called The Colliers of Denbighshire (trying to trace a copy).

However on the 1851 Census Record the Mary Jane Evans I have found  in the same house as John and his wife Elizabeth states her relationship as Niece.
Her age of 7 corresponds with my records but the fact that she is noted as Niece doesn't.

I expect some questions will be revealed on the birth and marriage certificates but even if these stack up, I will still have to question why she was noted as Niece?

I really want some information about who Johns children were.  I feel sure that   as he was a local legend, someone out there will be able to tell me more.

Thanks for the map

Kind Regards

Jan

Does anyone have a copy of the above book.   There is some information in this book about John Evans (Miner from the Pentrefron Pit) with extra details about his family that I would like more info on.

Any help much appreciated.

I was wondering how you were getting along with your research.  I came across your posting as I am researching my ancestor John Evans (the miner that was buried alive in the Pentrefron Pit in 1819 - don't know if you are familiar with the story).

John Evans was the next entry following Chaloners in 1851. Am I therefore right in thinking that this was the house next door to the Machine House.  This being the case is this house still standing?

I have been trying to trace him in 1841 and in 1861 with no luck at all.  I know that the 1841 census records were destroyed and I believe there are missing records in 1861 and I am therefore assuming that the records are missing.

Thank you.  I sent off for a marriage certificate last week of my great grandparents Catherine Rowlands and William Smith.

I am fairly hopeful this will confirm that Thomas Rowlands was Catherines father.

This being the case I am then going to send off for Mary Jane Evans and Thomas Rowlands Marraige Certificate along with Mary Janes Birth Certificate to hopefully confirm that she was the daughter of John.

I know there is some information in the book by George Lerry in "The Collieries of Denbighshire" so if anyone has a copy of this book and could look up the information I would be grateful.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / John Evans - PentreFron Pit Coedpoeth

I am trying to trace the children born to John and Elizabeth Evans.

John Evans was the miner rescued from the Pentre Fram Pit in Coedpoeth in 1819 and he had survived underground for 13 days!  It is a well documented story and a story that has been passed down the generations of my family.  My Mother was told that John Evans was her Great Great Grandfather.

To date I have traced our family tree back to Mary Jane Evans born in 1844.  I was led to believe that Mary Jane was the daughter of John and Elizabeth but on the 1851 Census whilst she is listed as living with John and Elizabeth her relationship is stated as Niece.

I am hopeful that someone out there will be able to provide me with some  more information
