London and Middlesex / Re: Henry Hibberd's Family - Islington
« on: Monday 27 September 10 18:20 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the pieces of info... yes I believe that is Henry's death in 1886 and I did know of an Ellen.  However, interesting point re 'H' as I had never thought about his absence on the 1881 and 1891 Censuses with this particular family.  I suppose he could easily be a grandson but I do know the names of Henry's grandchildren and there is not a 'H' amongst them.  It would be interesting to see if he appears in full name on the 1911 Census though he wouldn't be with his mother (Ellen) as I think she dies in 1903.

I think a peek at the 1911 Census would take me further forward with all of Henry's and Ellen's children but until it becomes part of a package on hopefully Ancestry I will have to remain in the dark!

London and Middlesex / Henry Hibberd's Family - Islington
« on: Friday 24 September 10 15:32 BST (UK)  »
I have a Henry Hibberd in my tree born 18/04/1831 in Somers Town, London.  His family originate from Wiltshire and he marries an Ellen Keel in Salisbury in 1853.  They have a very large family some born in Salisbury and some in Shoreditch when he and his wife move from Wiltshire to London.  Though I have some information of their time in Salisbury it his childrens' later lives in London that interest me.  Many seem to have ended up living in and around Islington with their families from the late 1880s onwards.  Living children were:-
Charles James b c1854 in Salisbury.
Walter b c1856 in Salisbury married a Georgina Hannah Hewitt in 1883 in Islington.
Frank b c1857 in Salisbury - he ends up in the print trade.
Ann Sophia b 15 Feb 1861 in or around Old Street, London - she may have died young.
Frederick William b c1865 in or around Old Street, London - he is my direct relative so I know more about him.
Thomas b c1867 in or around Old Street, London married a Eliza Robinson in 1891 in Brentford but married again to Eliza's sister Lucy later on.
John b c1869 in Shoreditch, London married a Marion Long in 1892.
Elizabeth A born c1876 in Shoredtich, London.
Then another son who I have as only 'H' from the 1901 Census born in Hoxton c 1879.
Many names I appreciate but some may be familiar to other Roots members.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: High Ongar - Camp/Betts
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi David

The parish records of St. Mary's Church, High Ongar are held at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford.  I live in Chelmsford and do visit the ERO to research my own Essex tree branches.  When I next go I could easily search for your family.  The only thing I cannot give you at the moment is date - I am most likely to visit there in early April (I work in a school and will be on Easter Holidays then) though I may manage a visit before then.  Posts about High Ongar always catch my eye as I too was baptised in St. Mary's and lived in High Ongar for the first 23 years of my life.

So if you are able to be patient for a little while longer - hopefully I can find some answers for you.

Regards.
Deborah

Many thanks to both Harry and Kenny - what a prompt and welcomed response to my questions.  The answer is that I am not sure that Samuel and Ann(e) were married in Henley - this information was provided to me by a descendent of Frances Catherine Butler.  I just presumed due to their first child being born in Henley but as Samuel is supposed to originate from Berkshire perhaps they married there?  If they were living in 1841 in Reading perhaps that is where Samuel originated from? Or as Harry suggests - married in the Henley Registration District?  It could be that their first child too was born in Great Marlow as the second and third were?  Harry did you find an Ellen Ann Butler baptised in Henley c 1818/19?
The next step presumably is to try the Reading/Berkshire link.

Oxfordshire / Butler Family - Henley on Thames
« on: Sunday 22 February 09 13:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have in my tree a Samuel Butler born c1792 ? in Berkshire.  I know he married an Ann b c1799 in Henley on Thames.  Ann died in Henley c1883.  I would love to find their wedding to find Ann's surname.  I'm sure they married in Henley.  Their first child Ellen Ann Butler was born in Henley c 1818/19 so I would guess her parents married around 1817/18.  Other siblings followed:-
Owen Thomas b c1819 in Great Marlow
Frances Catherine b c1820 Great Marlow
Henry B b c1821/22 but he was born in Thenford, Northants
George b c1825/26 again in Thenford, Northants
William Henry b c1827/28 in Henley (my paternal Gt. Gt. Grandfather)
Emma b c1829/30 in Henley
David b c 1830/31 in Thenford, Northants.
Their father Samuel's occupation on the 1861 Census is listed as a White Smith.  I have not found him or his family on any other Censuses.
Any help with tracing the marriage or baptisms of the Oxfordshire family members would be much appreciated as I live in Essex and am unable to access local parish records.
Many thanks.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: CONSTABLE family of WIX

Hi Manningtree Ed

Micaiah Aylward was my paternal Grandmother's uncle.  He was baptised John Micaiah but always know as Micaiah to separate him from his father who was also called John.  He was 19 when the accident happened and had only worked on the railways for four months.  I have a photocopy of the inquest into his death that was reported in the local paper.  If you would like to see it; send me a personal message via Rootschat and I'll send it to you.  If you have a photo I would like to see it.  Apparently next to it are two smaller headstones; these belong to children of one of Micaiah's sisters (Caroline).  Caroline was supposed to be psychic and on the day Micaiah was killed (the accident happened at 2 pm) she looked up and saw him standing at the top of her stairs she said to him, "What are you doing there Curly (his nickname)"?  He apparently replied, "That he'd come to see her before he died"!  I'm not sure who paid for the headstone (maybe the railways company) because Micaiah's father was an agricultural labour and I'm sure could not have afforded such a tribute.
Thank you for your interest.
Deborah.

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: Leytonstone
« on: Monday 29 December 08 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Do you have any idea of a parish in Leytonstone?  The names of a church would help when searching through baptismal records.  In 1903 Leytonstone was considered part of Essex.  Therefore, some microfiche records are held at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford.  If they are not there then they will be held at the local records office in Walthamstow, E17.  If you find her parents on the 1901 Census it will give a parish as well as a location in Leytonstone and most often children were baptised in the church nearest to their home.  If you don't have a parish then it would just mean searching all the churches where the ERO hold records.  In 1903 they would have been written fairly clearly and will be legible to read.

Hope this helps?

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: BETTIS, Essex 1840's

Hi Debra

Living in Chelmsford, Essex it is quite easy for me to visit the Essex Records Office so if you would like me to look at the Parish Records for St. Mary's Church, High Ongar from the time of William's baptism (1823) and forward to validate the baptism of siblings - let me know?

Similarly his parents marriage in 1821 - presumably the parish church at Stanford Rivers - though I know that would have been a very small community and they may have married at Ongar?  I could look for that for you and see who witnesses were etc.

I know High Ongar well having spent the first 23 years of my life there.  I was baptised in St. Mary's myself.  Small world.

Regards.
Deborah

PS:  As it is the festive season I'm not sure the opening hours of the ERO so I may not be able to go until the New Year.

Hi Valerie

Your guess is correct - I have not been back to the ERO since 19 Aug -unfortunately.  The combination of my mum currently residing in a hotel (whilst building work is being compeleted on her bungalow), a 17 year old son completing his UCAS application, a 16 year old son applying for colleges and a 13 year old daughter who sees me as her personal taxi service is leaving very little time to indulge in my hobby!  I will visit the ERO at sometime before the end of the year but please do post again - many hands make light work!

I will keep in touch.

Regards Deborah.
