The Common Room / Re: Hospitals in Westminster 1871
« on: Thursday 06 September 18 00:07 BST (UK)  »

My biggest problem is not having grown up in London, I'm not familiar with what hospitals would have been open at the time or whether they were near enough to treat someone who was living in the Westminster area.

Since my ancestor was poor it's possible that it would have been a charitable institution and also possible that he wouldn't have been to hospital at all

I found this UK Govt link where they list about 2,800 UK hospitals, by area and within the data is info about when each hospital was active and where the records are now kept.

So, this might help a little bit...but finding any specific record might be very difficult, given the number of patients that would have been treated.

However, if you just want to find out about which hospitals are in the area, then try this - the data is in TXT or XLS (Excel) formats:

https://data.gov.uk/dataset/hospital-records

Hi
You can try Facebook - as lots of people share memories and photos.

I found two pics within about 2 seconds of searching:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1177026819016145/photos/

You'll need to search through the photo's or just read the postings... there's a picture of 'Clifton Road Junior School Balsall Heath Birmingham' and another pic titled 'Dennis Road Board School, Balsall Heath - 1896 by Martin & Chamberlain Now Anderton Park School Dennis Road Balsall Heath Birmingham Grade 2 Listed Building '

The Common Room / Re: Hospital patients during 1939 register
« on: Wednesday 05 September 18 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Thanks for the info.

The POI (a close relative) died after 1991 and it's only my curiosity that will be rewarded if I do find them.

I've since found out about the London Metropolitan Archive (aka LMA), in London as according to the UK Govt website, there is a database of all the UK hospitals

(here: https://data.gov.uk/dataset/85bc224d-03ca-4816-b2ee-8734e0e7ff2d/hospital-records )

So, as I am sure they were in a London hospital (obv pre-NHS) so the above dataset gives me a pointer to the LMA as they hold lots of info about many aspects of London life.

A visit to the LMA is therefore called for methinks...

So, thanks for info - this has helped me to focus on my next steps :-)

Hi both

Thanks for the info.

The person I am looking for was born after 1917 (although since deceased) so the 100 year rule probably applies.

As for the actual hospital they were in - I don't know how big an 'institution' it was and hence whether it was an 'enumeration district' in it's own right.

So, this might well prove to be less easy to track down...unless I can get down to the National Archives and do a search directly on their records.

PS: Have edited original subject heading ;-)

The Common Room / Hospital patients during 1939 register
« on: Wednesday 05 September 18 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to track down a relative who I know was in hospital during the 1939 register, but I don't know which hospital and therefore don't know the area (other than it being in England).

Is this a fruitless search? (ie were patients included on this register?)

Or maybe there are 'other' official records that document patients?

Any help appreciated.

Hi all

Just to follow up on this thread - I've been in contact (and met up) with the OP over the last couple of years as I was one of the people she was looking for.... !!

If I'd stayed a regular member since I first joined here (over 10 yrs ago), I'd have seen this sooner...but I've only just remembered I had an account on here !!

Just goes to show that this sort of forum DOES work !!

regards to everyone still searching !

Hi all,

I can't believe it....I've actually found someone else related to the Nightingale Baronetcy....and this after trawling the net for about 8 years....!

If I get 10 minutes, I'll post my line.....

I really must update my family tree I was working on (until about 3 years ago, when my business took over my priorities !).

regards

Tim O'Malley
Grandmother: Lilian Bertha PRESSLAND, dau. of Louisa Maitland ADDISON and her 2nd husband, Herbert Caleb PRESSLAND.

L.M ADDISON was the 1st wife of Edward Henry NIGHTINGALE, by whom she had a son Edward Manners NIGHTINGALE (who subsequently inherited the Baronetcy making him the 14th Baron and to whom "my" grand-mother was his younger half-sister). This means I'm not in the direct bloodline of the NIGHTINGALES, but it's an interest all the same... :)

E.H. Nightingale (who died young, age 39, in 1895, after 8 yrs of marriage) was the son of Henry Dickonson NIGHTINGALE, who was the son of Charles NIGHTINGALE, who was son of Charles Ethelston NIGHTINGALE, which is where I link to the OP.

BTW: Most of the info I have on the NIGHTINGALE's, I got from their entry in Who's Who....but there are some distinct differences between some of the info posted on this thread and the Who's Who entries...I'll have to refer back to it and see if the commanality of first names used by the family might have caused errors to crop up.

Edit: There's a useful NIGHTINGALE family tree here:
http://www.william1.co.uk/w148.htm

and the lineage of the Baronetcy is here (some way down the page!!):
http://www.angeltowns.com/town/peerage/baronetsn.htm

and there's a nice "report" about Newport Pond, Essex from whence the Nightingale family started (see the very end of the page !):
