I have also tried to trace Margaret Minty, I have found 4 illegitimate children born to her, but cannot find them after they were born, or where she went, She had a son John born 1869, Williamina born 1872, james born 1874 and William born 1882. They all had different fathers as far as I can tell

Ross & Cromarty / Alexander Ross and Janet 1841 Census - Cromarty
« on: Friday 08 January 10 05:35 GMT (UK)  »
I hope some kind person could help me with my family. I believe this following family to be my great grandfather

1841 - Cromarty - Rose St.

Margaret  Ross age 50
John Ross  age 26
Alexander Ross age 54
Janet Ross age 46
Alex Ross age 10
Gilbert Ross age 10
Christina Ross age 7
James Ross age 4   now I think this James Ross was my gr grandfather. He married Elizabeth Graham Nov 18, 1864. It has been so difficult to trace if this is my family. My grandmothers marriage certificate states her parents were James Ross and Elizabeth Graham from Cromarty. Elizabeth Graham was born in Lairg, Sutherland. Now it seems that Elizabeth went by different first names, so some of her children list her name as, Elizabeth, Betty, Isabella.

Now this is where it gets difficult

my grandmother was Mary MacGregor Ross, her death certificate here in Canada has her born in 1886, but I find her born in Cromarty around 1880. In 1901 she is living in Edinburgh, so sometime between 1880 and 1901 some of the family moved to Edinburgh. There she is 21 years old in 1901, in Canada she is 25 in 1911, and according to her marriage certificate here in Canada so she must have changed her age when she married my grandfather as he was born in 1887. Does this make any sense, her age is six or 7 yrs younger according to all the documentation in Canada.

So, getting back to James Ross and his family when living in Cromarty, if this is my family which I believe to be so, where did they go, did they all go to Edinburgh, or just my grandmother and her siblings. I have found no death records in Cromarty for anyone in the 1841 census above.

I know this all sounds very confusing, and it is to me here in Canada, can anyone help please.

Thankyou
Ross Pratt
